The tree flora of southeastern Brazilian Atlantic forests was investigated according to two main aspects: (a) the variations in floristic composition of bodi rain and semi‐deciduous forests were analyzed in terms of geographic and climatic variables by performing multivariate analyses on 125 existing floristic checklists; and (b) the links of both rain and semi‐deciduous forests to Amazonian forests and Cerrados (woody savanna) were assessed. All analyses were performed at the species, genus, and family levels. The information obtained for the 125 forest areas was organized into an environmental database containing geographic and climatic records, and a floristic database containing binary presence records for 2532 species, 520 genera, and 106 families. Canonical correspondence analyses (CCA) were utilized to assess the relationship between geographic and climatic variables, and tree flora composition. Venn diagrams and cluster analyses were used to assess the floristic links to Amazonian forests and Cerrados. The following patterns were detected at all three taxonomic levels: (a) the differentiation between rain and semi‐deciduous forests is floristically consistent and strongly correlated with rainfall regime, although transitions may be abrupt to gradual; (b) a north–south differentiation exists for both rain and semi‐deciduous forests, probably caused by variations in both temperature and rainfall regime; (c) The flora of semi‐deciduous forests also changes with increasing distance from the ocean and the associated increasing rainfall seasonality; and (d) elevation and associated temperatures are strongly correlated with the internal differentiation of both rain and semi‐deciduous forests. To a considerable extent, the tree flora of semi‐deciduous forests is a subset of the rain forest flora, probably extracting species that are able to cope with a longer dry season. There is greater floristic similarity at the species level between Atlantic rain and semi‐deciduous forests than between any of these and either Amazonian rain forests or Cerrados. Nevertheless, semi‐deciduous forests and Cerrados show stronger links, particularly at the generic and familial levels. Therefore, rhere is little floristic ground for viewing Atlantic rain forests as being closer to their Amazonian counterparts than to the adjacent semi‐deciduous forests. The most appropriate view of rain and semi‐deciduous forests in southeastern Brazil is that of a continuum in tree species distribution. We suggest that the definition of Atlantic forests should be as comprehensive as that of Amazonian forests.
35Aim: We aimed to assess the contribution of marginal habitats to the tree species 36 richness of the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) biodiversity hotspot. In addition, we 37 aimed to determine which environmental factors drive the occurrence and 38 distribution of these marginal habitats. Brazil where it largely occurs, stretches for over 3,500km across equatorial, tropical 73 and subtropical latitudes, and is renowned worldwide for being one of the 35 74 biodiversity hotspots for conservation prioritisation (Myers et al., 2000). Its 75 importance is also demonstrated by its designation as one of the five primary 76 vegetation 'Domains' of Brazil (IBGE, 1993; Ab'Sáber, 2003), the others being the The prevailing land cover of these bordering Domains are semi-arid thorn woodlands distribution of rain forest species in the Atlantic Domain, which at its harshest 88 extremes give rise to distinct habitats (one for each factor), referred to as marginal 89 habitats. Therefore, the rain forest is placed by Scarano (2009) (Galindo-Leal et al., 2003; Tabarelli et al., 2004; 2005; Joly et al., 2014 203The data were originally compiled from an extensive survey of published and 217It also excludes checklists with low species richness (< 20 species), because this is 218 often due to low sampling/collecting efforts, which results in poor descriptive power. 219This study used a subset of tree inventories from the NTT database, The distribution of the sites in the ordination space yielded by NMDS (Fig. 3a waterlogged soils at positive scores (tropical riverine forests). 377The floristic composition of marginal habitats is not simply a nested subset of 378 the more species rich rain forest. The turnover component accounts for most of the 379 floristic dissimilarity of each marginal habitat in relation to rain forests (Fig. 4). 380Nestedness is higher than the turnover component in very few cases (i.e., few The forward selection procedure retained 13 environmental variables in the 390 model to explain the variation in tree species composition (Table 1). In partitioning 391 the variation explained by the retained environmental and spatial predictors, we 392 found that the environmental fraction explained 27% of the variation, 5% of which 393 was independent of spatial autocorrelation (P < 0.01). The environmental predictors 394could not account for a spatially structured variation of 12% (P < 0.01), and 61% of 395 the variation remained unexplained (see discussion for more details). 396The harshest extremes of the retained environmental variables (Table 1) rock outcrops (including campos rupestres) from all others vegetation types (Fig. 3a). 404Within the rock outcrop habitat, the frequency of frost was associated with the forests and tropical riverine forests (Figs. 2b and 3b). At the harshest extreme of the 414 drought-stress gradient (Fig. 3b) Fig. S1). Because the overall floristic dissimilarity between cloud forests and rain 430forests was relatively low (Fig. 3), we assessed the rates of endemism con...
-(Distribution of tree and shrub species along a gradient of soils and topography in a strip of riparian forest of the São Francisco River in Três Marias, MG, Brazil). A survey of the community of trees and shrubs, topography and soils of a fragment of tropical semideciduous and tropical deciduous forests was carried aiming at assessing alleged correlations between the variations in physiognomic structure and species composition and variations in soil water regime and chemical fertility. The forest fragment, with an area of 12 ha, is situated on the right margin of the Rio São Francisco (18°05'26" S and 45°10'54" W), Três Marias municipality, Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. A topographic survey and a detailed soil classification were accomplished in the forest area. Individual trees and shrubs with diameter at the base of the stem (dbs) ≥ 5 cm were sampled in 50 plots with 15 × 15 m. Samples of surface soil (0-20 cm of depth) were collected from each plot for analyses of chemical and textural properties. The survey registered 1,449 individuals belonging to 117 species, 83 genera, and 33 families, as well as three soil subgroups and five drainage classes. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of the environmental variables and species abundances indicated that they are distributed in the fragment under a strong influence of drainage regime and chemical fertility of the soils, suggesting that the availability of water and mineral nutrients are the chief environmental variables determining species distribution in the forest.
-(Structural variations of the arboreal component of a tropical upper montane semideciduous forest in the Perdizes Plateau, Carrancas, SE Brazil). The tree community of an area of upper montane forest situated in the Perdizes Plateau, SE Brazil (21º36'S and 44º37'W), was surveyed with the purpose of assessing the correlations between their structural variations and environmental variables related to the substratum and edge effect. Variations were analyzed for physiognomic structure (tree density, basal area and size distribution) and community structure (species composition, distribution and diversity). Individual trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 5 cm were surveyed within 30 plots of 20 × 20 m where topographic data and samples of surface soil were also collected, the latter for chemical and textural analyses. The survey totaled 2,565 individual trees, 218 species, 116 genera and 55 families, on three soil classes: Litholic Neosols, Humic Cambisols, and Regolithic Neosols. The studied tree community corresponds to the floristic and physiognomic features of the upper montane forests of southeastern Brazil, differing from those of lower altitudes in the same region. Variations in species diversity and composition and in physiognomic structure showed correlations with environmental variables, making up two distinct vegetation formations: (a) a less diverse and taller tree community in the well-drained areas of the forest interior, corresponding to the Humic Cambisols and Regolithic Neosols; and (b) a more diverse and shorter tree community in the strongly drained and sloping areas of the forest edge which correspond to the Litholic Neosols. The presumably more heterogeneous environment of the forest edge is probably responsible for its higher species diversity.Key words -edge-effect, species diversity, species-environment relationship, tree community, tropical montane semideciduous forest RESUMO -(Variações estruturais do compartimento arbóreo de uma floresta semidecídua alto-montana na chapada das Perdizes, Carrancas, MG).
