RESUMO-A adoção de práticas comportamentais contrárias às recomendações médicas dificulta que indivíduos hipertensos mantenham a pressão arterial (PA) controlada. Com objetivo de identificar comportamentos supersticiosos e práticas comportamentais que interferem no controle da PA, realizou-se estudo qualitativo. Para coleta dos dados foram entrevistados 15 idosos hipertensos, residentes na zona rural do município de Governador Valadares. Na apuração dos dados, utilizou-se a Análise de Conteúdo de Bardin. Os comportamentos supersticiosos e práticas comportamentais inadequadas praticadas para reduzir a PA foram assim agrupados: Adoção de Terapias Alternativas (uso de chás caseiros); Autocontrole (fuga ou esquiva de situações estressoras); Adoção de dietas inconsistentes (não comer certos alimentos); Restrição de Atividades (evitar atividades físicas). Muitos comportamentos supersticiosos desses idosos chegam erroneamente a ser considerados adequados por profissionais de saúde, reforçando sua emissão. Conclui-se que a utilização de tratamentos contraindicados é amplamente disseminada entre os entrevistados, devendo-se priorizar estratégias que motivem hipertensos a adotarem comportamentos adequados.
