Abstract:In this paper, an experimental methodology is described to assess the structural strength of unreinforced concrete armor units (CAUs). The methodology is applied to measure the structural integrity under impact loads of the new Cubipod CAU compared to the conventional cube CAU. The casting systems and clamps are described to manufacture and handle the 15-tonne conventional cubic block and 16-tonne Cubipod prototypes used for the drop tests. Two separate reinforced-concrete platforms were used for overturning and free fall tests, respectively; Cubipods withstand drops more than 50% higher than conventional cubes of similar size and concrete strength. Two extreme free fall tests, confirmed the structural robustness of Cubipod armor units. Manufacturing cycletime as well as storage and handling procedures are similar for both Cubipods and conventional cubic blocks.
Cuad Med Forense 2009; 15(55):77-81 ABSTRACTAn extremely unusual event in forensic pathology is the postmortem fetal extrusion or "coffin birth". It is defined as the expulsion of a dead fetus after the death of a pregnant woman when the maternal uterus shows signs of putrefaction. It is considered that the gases generated during the emphysematous phase of the cadaveric putrefaction may distend the uterus causing partial or total fetal extrusion. We present the case of a seven month pregnant woman who disappeared and was found dead some days later in a state of advanced putrefaction. The fetus was discovered inside the woman's underwear at the moment of undressing the body before autopsy. At the same time, an historical review of the issue is carried out.
This paper describes the design process, hydraulic stability tests and construction of two single-layer Cubipod armored breakwaters in the Port of Punta Langosteira (A Coruña, Spain), located on the Atlantic coast of Spain, the first single-layer armors of randomly placed massive concrete armor units. The environmental, geotechnical, economic and logistic conditions favored randomly-placed Cubipods in single-layer armoring. 3D hydraulic stability tests of single-layer Cubipod armored breakwaters proved useful to validate the final design with 15-tonne and 25-tonne Cubipod units.
It is important to underline the prevalence of suicide among young people 15 to 25 years old, a population in which suicide is the second leading cause of death after traffic accidents. This paper provides a descriptive epidemiological study of confirmed suicides in people less than 26 years of age, which occurred in the province of Seville during the period 2007-2010. The factors associated with suicidal behaviour are presented and compared with those published in the scientific literature on the subject. The average global rate of suicide was 1.38±0.1 cases/100.000 inhabitants with a male/female ratio of 3:1. The overall mean age was of 20.9±3.1 years (21±3 years in men and 20±4 years in women). Twenty-two per cent of suicides occurred in the capital compared to 78% in the rest of the province. Hanging was the most widely used method in both men (71%) and women (62%), followed by jumping from height. The most common location to commit suicide in both sexes was at home (72%). In 44% of cases there was a history of psychiatric illness with being depressive disorder the most frequent (50%), followed by paranoid schizophrenia (14%). Toxicological analysis was positive in 47% cases, with ethanol the most frequently detected chemical (80%), either alone or in combination with other toxics.
ABSTRACTObjective: To investigate the experience and knowledge of parturients about the phenomenon of institutional obstetric violence. Methods: Descriptive, qualitative and exploratory study carried out in a public maternity hospital in the interior of the State of Maranhão with 12 women attending the health unit through a semi -structured interview. Data analysis was performed using the Bardin content analysis method. Results: Most of the participants did not recognize or understand any practices of institutional obstetric violence, leading them to mistakenly believe that the ill-treatment suffered was part of the care practices of childbirth. This context can be related to the lack of prior knowledge of women in relation to institutional obstetric violence. Final considerations: Institutional obstetric violence is still surrounded by taboos, in view of the knowledge of the parturients about the subject is still deficient, which ends up favoring such acts of dehumanization in an emotionally and physically significant moment for the woman. For women, institutional obstetric violence has many facets, ranging from the lack of professional awareness to physical aggression. The solution to the problem of obstetric violence, according to the perspective of som...
