Desde o final do século XIX, o Serviço Social tem participado na construção de conhecimento a respeito do ser humano, suas relações sociais e o enfrentamento de questões sociais em diversas áreas. A área da saúde tem se destacado por constituir o maior campo da prática profissional, já tendo bem discutidas as questões relacionadas à saúde mental, da mulher e da criança. No entanto, a discussão sobre a questão do câncer ainda é incipiente. O INCA, órgão do Ministério da Saúde responsável, também, pela produção de conhecimento e formação de recursos humanos em Oncologia, iniciou em 2000 o curso de Especialização em Serviço Social em Oncologia com estes objetivos. Um dos requisitos para a obtenção do título é a elaboração de um trabalho de conclusão de curso (TCC). Estes trabalhos têm contribuído para a construção de conhecimento em Serviço Social em Oncologia refletindo sobre categorias teóricas, discutindo a prática e analisando as políticas públicas de saúde. Este trabalho é uma pesquisa documental das monografias defendidas por profissionais deste curso tendo como objetivo discutir a contribuição científica das três primeiras turmas, categorizadas por: objeto de estudo, metodologia utilizada e áreas da prática em Oncologia. Numa abordagem descritiva, foram analisadas 23 monografias que já se encontram na sua versão final. Todas as monografias tiveram como objeto de reflexão a prática desenvolvida nas diferentes unidades do INCA, enfocando a atuação na assistência, paliação e políticas de saúde, tendo como sujeitos os pacientes, familiares e profissionais. Elas refletem a complexidade e especificidade de tal atuação.
