FERREIRA GULLAR (1967, p. 253). Nota introdutóriaEste artigo retoma a reflexão do livro Em busca do povo brasileiro (cf. Ridenti, 2000). AbstractArtists and intellectuals in post-1960 Brazil This article is about the progress of Brazilian left wing intellectuals, especially the artists, after the 1960's. In it, we develop the hypothesis of the existence of a structure of feelings of revolutionary Brazilianism, strong until 1968, as an answer to changes in
The article reconstructs and analyses the links between the journal Cadernos Brasileiros and the Congress for Cultural Freedom, which involved a relation of both dependency and relative autonomy, between 1959 and 1970. Despite both institutions claiming to be liberal and anti-communist, they did not always fully coincide in their response to decisive historical events of the period, such as the 1964 military coup in Brazil, collaboration with the military regime and resistance to it. The intellectuals involved with the Brazilian journal were active in the ongoing social struggles, shifting from strong anti-communist positions, favourable to what they called the '1964 revolution,' to the later formulation of criticism of the military regime, opening up the journal to collaboration of social scientists considered left-wing, without losing the opportunity to accommodate the demands of the regime in power.
This article takes up once again the events of 1968 in Brazil, particularly within the labor movement and the student movement. Both were to the left of the more traditional movements and proposed an alternative to the PCB and its policy of moderation, which was dominant in the pre-64 period and revealed its limitations as much among workers as among students. However, the student and labor struggles of 1968 in Brazil were unable to make viable a mass alternative, exhausting itself in its vanguard role in the conflict with the dictatorship.
This article highlights the renewed interest in the history of the coup of 1964 and the dictatorship that followed in Brazil, as well as some debates involved in the production of memoirs, investigative journalism and academic research on the topic. It analyses at more length one of the polemics: the increasing use of the term ‘civilian‐military’ to qualify the coup, the rule, and the dictatorship. It argues that – independent of the use of the term – the most important aspect is to understand the complex relationship between the military and civilians as part of a broader process of conservative modernisation during this period.
