Infection caused by canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious disease with high incidence and lethality in the canine population. Antiviral activity of flavonoids quercetin, morin, rutin and hesperidin, and phenolic cinnamic, trans-cinnamic and ferulic acids were evaluated in vitro against the CDV using the time of addition assay to determine which step of the viral replicative cycle was affected. All flavonoids displayed great viral inhibition when they were added at the times 0 (adsorption) and 1h (penetration) of the viral replicative cycle. Both quercetin and hesperidin presented antiviral activity at the time 2h (intracellular). In the other hand, cinnamic acid showed antiviral activity at the times 0 and 2h while trans-cinnamic acid showed antiviral effect at the times -1h (pre-treatment) and 0 h. Ferulic acid inhibited CDV replicative cycle at the times 0 and 1h. Our study revealed promising candidates to be considered in the treatment of CDV. Structural differences among compounds and correlation to their antiviral activity were also explored. Our analysis suggest that these compounds could be useful in order to design new antiviral drugs against CDV as well as other viruses of great meaning in veterinary medicine.
A B S T R A C TThis study aimed to evaluate the fruit yield and the distribution of 'Tommy Atkins' mango root system under different irrigation regimes in the semiarid region of Bahia. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and three replicates: 1 -Irrigation supplying 100% of ETc in phases I, II and III; 2 -Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) supplying 50% of ETc in phase I (beginning of flowering to early fruit growth); 3 -RDI supplying 50% ETc in phase II (start of expansion until the beginning of physiological maturity); 4 -RDI supplying 50% ETc in phase III (physiological mature fruits); 5 -No irrigation during all three phases. The regulated deficit irrigation supplying 50% of the ETc during phase I and II provided larger root length density of 'Tommy Atkins' mango. Regardless of management strategy, the roots were developed in all evaluated soil volume and the highest density is concentrated from 0.50 to 1.50 m distance from the trunk and in 0.20 to 0.90 m depth in the soil, that suggests this region to be the best place for fertilizer application as well for soil water sensor placement. The application of RDI during fruit set does not influence either root distribution or production. Root system and crop production is significantly reduced under no irrigation conditions.
A B S T R A C TThe aim of this study was to evaluate the 'Tommy Atkins' mango yield and photosynthesis in regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) in semiarid conditions of Bahia, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block with five treatments and six replications: T1, irrigation supplying 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc) in phases: I (beginning of flowering to early fruit growth), II (start of expansion until early physiological maturity) and phase III (physiologically mature fruits); T2, RDI with 50% ETc in phase I; T3, RDI with 50% ETc in phase II; T4, RDI with 50% ETc in phase III; T5, No irrigation. The soil water deficit causes a reduction in photosynthesis. Mango yield in treatment 4 was approximately 5.5 and 2 times greater than in treatments 5 and 2, respectively. The use of RDI with 50% water depth reduction applied in the third phase of 'Tommy Atkins' mango fruit development was efficient. The use of RDI with 50% ETc in the third phase of fruit development provided the best yield of 'Tommy Atkins' mango for the 350 g weight class.
This study was conducted to evaluate the yield, water use efficiency and physiologic characteristics of "Tommy Atkins" mango under partial rootzone drying. The experiment was carried out in an orchard of mango in the irrigated perimeter of Ceraíma, BA. Five treatments and six repetitions were used with one tree per experimental plot: 01-Full Irrigation, 100% of ETc, 02-100% of ETc with frequency of alternance (FA) of 15 days, 03-80% ETc with FA of 15 days, 04-60% of ETc with FA of 15 days, 05-40% ETc with FA of 15 days. The treatments were conductedfrom the beginning of flowering to the harvest of mango in an orchard irrigated by drip. There was no significant reduction in productivity of "Tommy Atkins" mango under PRD up to 40% of ETc and PRD with 40% ETc resulted in greater water use efficiency. There was no significant difference among the averages of photosynthetically active radiation, Qleaf; leaf temperature, Tl; internal CO2 concentration, Ci; transpiration, E; stomatal conductance, gs; photosynthesis, A; carboxylation efficiency, A/Ci; quantum efficiency of photosynthesis, A/Qleaf and instantaneous water use efficiency, A/E between full irrigation and PRD with different water depth. The increase in leaf temperature causes reduction in A/Qleaf and A/E, however, it increases the transpiration. Increased gs results in higher rates of E, A and A/Ci. The use of the PRD with 40% of ETc causes no interference in gas exchange, maintains the yield and increases water use efficiency in "Tommy Atkins" mango tree.
Forage cactus pear is considered a xerophilic plant, so it is adapted to harsh semiarid conditions and is a forage resource of significant importance for animal production in regions that are subject to food shortage and long dry periods. We aimed to evaluate the morphometric and physiologic characteristics and water-use efficiency of ‘Gigante’ forage cactus pear under different settings of irrigation depth and irrigation intervals with saline water. The treatments included seven conditions of water application: rainfed, 5 liters of water per linear meter every 15 days; 7% reference evapotranspiration (ETo) with a 15-day irrigation interval; 15% ETo with a 7-day irrigation interval; 33% ETo with a 3-day irrigation interval; 50% ETo with a 2-day irrigation interval; and 100% ETo with daily irrigation. Likewise, the use of saline water (3.6 dS m-1) as irrigation water on forage cactus pear did not stress the crop even in the presence of salts. The treatment with saline water and 33% ETo with a 3-day irrigation interval increased the plant height, number of cladodes, cladode area index, green mass and dry matter yields of forage cactus pear.
Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) is a recently discovered virus that has been detected in the swine population worldwide. PCV3 infection has been associated with several signs, but its pathogenicity is currently uncertain. This review article aimed to analyse the PCV3 strains that circulate in different countries in North and South America. We demonstrated the main regions of polymorphisms in the capsid protein structure. Furthermore, we found that PCV3 has at least six different lineages circulating in the Americas. Additional studies are required to determine the role of PCV3 in different clinical syndromes and its epidemiology in swine herds in North and South American countries.
