abstract:In recent decades, the pulp industry has been changing and improving its manufacturing processes in order to enhance production capacity, product quality and environmental performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bleachability effect on the efficient washing and alkaline leaching in eucalyptus and pine Kraft pulps using three different bleaching sequences: AD(EP)D, A/D(EP)DP and D HT (EP)DP. This study was carried out in two stages. In the first part, the optimum conditions for pulp bleaching in order to achieve a brightness of 90% ISO were established. The second step was a comparative study between the pulps that received alkaline leaching and efficient washing with reference pulp (without treatment). The brightness, viscosity, kappa number and HexA in pulp were analyzed. The three sequences studied reached the desired brightness, but the sequence AD(EP)D produced a lower reagent consumption for the same brightness. In the three sequences studied, the efficient washing of the pulp after oxygen delignification has contributed significantly to the removal of dissolved organic and inorganic materials in the pulp and the alkaline leaching decreased significantly the pulp kappa number due to a higher pulp delignification and bleachability.
The main goal of this study was to evaluate the potential of depithed bagasse for the production of printing and writing paper. Industrial whole bagasse was separated into two fractions: pith and depithed bagasse. The depithed bagasse was cooked by the soda process to two different degrees of delignification. The resulting pulps were fully bleached by the O-D*-(EP)-D sequence and characterized for their beatability, drainability, and physical-mechanical properties. Bleached soda pulps cooked to kappa 17.5 and 10.8 showed similar refinability and resistance to drainage, but the strength properties (tensile, burst, and tear) were slightly higher for the kappa 17.5 pulp at beating energy consumptions in the range of 2-7 W•h. We concluded that both pulps from depithed sugar cane bagasse would be suitable for the production of printing and writing paper grade pulps, but the higher kappa pulp is more economically attractive given its higher pulping yield, without significantly increasing the bleaching chemical demand.
Mills have largely used chlorine dioxide (ClO2) for eucalyptus kraft pulp bleaching. Different mills have observed significant variation in ClO2 demand to reach full brightness (≥90 ISO). These large differences in ClO2 consumption derive from many factors. The most significant include differences in carryover loads and hexenuronic acid (HexA) contents and the level of chlorate formation across bleaching. Handling of pulp with high HexA content and ClO2 losses to chlorate can be minimized by proper operation of the ClO2 stages across the bleach plant. An oxygen delignified eucalyptus kraft pulp with a kappa of 10-12 units contains only 4-6 units actually derived from lignin. This scarce amount of lignin (0.6%-0.9%) is not able to consume high ClO2 doses and, as a consequence, the excess ClO2 applied can end up being converted into chlorate. Hence, proper optimization of ClO2 bleaching stages can save significant amounts of this oxidant. This study focused on optimizing ClO2 bleaching for a typical oxygen delignified eucalyptus kraft pulp of kappa number 11.7. Elemental chlorine free bleaching was carried out with the D0-(EP)-D1 sequence. The following conditions were varied in the D0 stage: temperature, end pH, and kappa factor. The results indicated that maximum ClO2 bleaching efficiency is achieved when minimum chlorate is formed, especially when ClO2 bleaching is adjusted in such a way that residual active chlorine is maintained to a minimum. The most significant variable affecting chlorate formation is pH; however, ClO2 doses (ClO2 concentration) also play a very important role. Chlorate formation is more intense in the D1 stage in relation to the D0 stage. Optimum conditions to run the D0 stage were 90°C, 3.5 pH, and 0.22 kappa factor.
ABSTRACT:The main goal of this study was to characterize chemically and morphologically elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), and evaluate the potential of its fibers for production of printing and writing paper grade pulp. The elephant grass was chemically and morphologically characterized and cooked by the soda process to two different degrees of delignification (kappa 17.5 and 10.6). The resulting pulps were fully bleached by the O-D*-(EP)-D sequence and characterized for their beatability, drainability and physical-mechanical properties. The lignin content (20.2%) was low, indicating that this grass should be easier to pulp. The morphological analyses of the elephant grass indicated a short fiber material, similar to hardwoods. The soda pulp from elephant grass cooked to kappa number 17.5 presented higher screened yield than 10.6 kappa pulp, with alkali demands of 15.0% and 20.0%, respectively. The total active chlorine required by the 17.5 and 10.6 kappa pulps, were 42.1 and 35.1 kg/odt pulp, respectively, to achieve an ISO brightness of approximately 90.0%. The bleached soda pulps cooked to 17.5 and 10.6 kappa number showed similar refinability and resistance to drainage, but the tensile and burst index were highest for the 17.5 kappa pulp at beating energy consumptions in the range of 0-6 Wh. It was concluded that both 10.6 and 17.5 kappa pulps from elephant grass are suitable for the production of printing and writing paper grade pulps, but the highest kappa 17.5 pulp is more economically attractive given its highest pulping yield, despite the significantly increased of chemical demand for bleaching A produção de papel para impressão e escrita Grau de celulose a partir de capim-elefante.
