Il y a vingt ans, l'o r m forgeait la notion de récit médiatique, en utilisant le modèle construit par Paul Ricoeur dans Temps et récit, pour l'appliquer à la mise en récit des informations dans les médias contemporains. Aujourd'hui, à l'heure où les nouvelles technologies ont modifié les modes de fabrication du récit et les pratiques des rédactions, où les usagers sont aussi les co-constructeurs de l'information qu'ils lisent et critiquent, il faut rediscuter de la pertinence de la notion même du récit. Celui-ci est plus éclaté, ouvert à des réécritures, à des formes de polyphonie, qui demandent de fonder une hypernarratologie. C'est urgent, pour ne pas succomber au modèle dominant du storytelling, dont une critique narratologique doit être développée, et pour comprendre le retour d'un journalisme narratif, aux États-Unis et en Europe, tant en presse écrite que dans les nouveaux formats comme la revue XXI ou les webdocumentaires.
La figure de Foxymore convient assez exactement pour tenter d'appréhender les rapports complexes qui naissent de Fassociation entre ces deux termes "récit" et "médiatique", mais aussi de comprendre les enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques qu'ils soulèvent. Cette conjonction lexicale permet, premier paradoxe, de restreindre Fobjet "récit", par rapport aux définitions qu'en donnent les linguistes, puisqu'elle semble limiter Fextension du corpus au seul domaine des médias, comme s"il y surgissait un type de récit spécifique. Mais dans le même temps, et contradictoirement, nous élargirons nettement la catégorie du type narratif, tel que Fentendent les théoriciens du texte, parce que notre objet même va nous y contraindre. C'est donc ce double mouvement, d'ouverture et de fermeture, qui nous amène à mettre en exergue la figure de Foxymore, en préambule à cette réflexion sur la présence et Fextension du type narratif dans le système médiatique.
