Ash dieback, caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, has been observed in Europe for several years. In Belgium, the disease was first reported in 2010. Besides crown defoliation and dieback, collar lesions have sometimes been reported. To evaluate the prevalence and the progression of collar lesions and crown defoliation in ash dieback-affected stands of various ages, a survey was conducted in 2013 and 2014 on 268 ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior) originating from 17 Walloon forest stands. The results showed that the proportion of trees with collar lesions greatly increased between June 2013 and September 2014 and that there appeared to be no significant link between a tree's diameter-at-breast height (DBH) and collar lesion occurrence. The mean percentage of defoliation increased in each forest stand across time, with observations conducted in September 2013 and 2014 showing a positive correlation with the mean percentage of trees with collar lesions. Molecular tests were carried out on 103 additional trees originating from 12 of the 17 stands to evaluate the occurrence of H. fraxineus and Armillaria spp. at the collar level. Most of the trees (98%) were infected by H. fraxineus. In contrast, only 41% of the samples were infected with Armillaria spp., most commonly A. gallica and A. cepistipes. This study discusses the role of Armillaria spp. and the rapid increase in the number of trees with collar lesions within the context of the evolution of ash dieback in Europe.
Direct and indirect use of values and non-use values from forest ecosystem services perform an invaluable set of functions that cater to the needs of both living and non-living things. The values include market services obtained from timber and non-timber forest products, and non-market services (recreation, watershed protection and conservation value) were identified as components of the Total Economic Value (TEV). However, it is difficult to assign a monetary value to all goods and services provided by the forest. Failure to conserve the national park will result in the degradation of the forest and a reduction in the contribution of the forest ecosystem services to the community. Based on the result of this study, the TEV value of forest ecosystem services was estimated at RM 13 billion, and the estimation provides policy-relevant information for forest management and conservation purposes in Malaysia.
Abstract. The increase in tourist demand for highland experience is inevitable. Cameron Highlands, established as a Tea Plantation Estate during the British Colonial era in 1929, has evolved into a major highland tourism destination providing a cool climatic experience coupled with scenic beauty in the midst of Tudor concept architecture which enhances the destinations historical value. Realising such tourism potential, the Boh Plantation management has provided a visitor centre as recreational facility for tourist utilisation. However, the absence in imposing an entrance fee has left a vacuum in determining the recreational economic value of this facility as the benefit of this agro-tourism product to tourists remains unknown. It would be important for the management to identify the benefit since the development and maintenance of the facility is costly. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to estimate the benefit of such establishment in highlands area by assessing visitor's Willingness to pay (WTP). The study examines, explores and debates the issues in a critical yet supportive environment especially highlands. The study obtained 179 usable questionnaires from visitors during weekends, weekdays and public holidays. The result showed that 59% of the visitors were willing to pay for the agro-tourism product. The WTP was estimated at RM 7.21 (€1.81). Three factors were found to be influencing WTP which were monthly income, years of education and perception on scenery. Although the study was conducted post development, the finding indicated the WTP for current management practise. Should the management change its style, it would also affect WTP and also the total economic value. Since WTP is established concept, the finding of the study reflects on the opportunities, barriers and challenges inherent in embracing postdisciplinary approaches to research and suggest ways to further enhance the approach.
