The total economic value of forest ecosystem services in the tropical forests of Malaysia

Abstract: Direct and indirect use of values and non-use values from forest ecosystem services perform an invaluable set of functions that cater to the needs of both living and non-living things. The values include market services obtained from timber and non-timber forest products, and non-market services (recreation, watershed protection and conservation value) were identified as components of the Total Economic Value (TEV). However, it is difficult to assign a monetary value to all goods and services provided by the … Show more

“…Negasi et al studied the changes in ecosystem service values in response to land-use/land-cover dynamics in a dry Afromontane forest in northern Ethiopia [73]. Nitanan et al evaluated the total economic value of forest ecosystem services in the tropical forests of Malaysia [74]. Diego et al assessed the economic value of the Calden Forest in southern Córdoba Island through a willingness-to-pay survey [75].…”

“…In view of the characteristics of FEA with temporal and spatial heterogeneity, dynamic research is carried out. Early economic assessment studies mainly assumed spatial homogeneity across the study area [74]. Bateman et al argue that this assumption is not ideal for accurate modeling because the real environment shows the variation of features throughout the space [87].…”

“…The valuation of tropical forests potential could be done with integration between some indicators of ecosystem services (such as provision, regulating, supporting, and cultural services) and the concept of total economic value (such as use-value, indirect use-value, and no-use value) (Matthew et al 2019). A study found that the total economic value of forest ecosystem services is estimated at RM 13 billion (Nitanan et al 2020). While the average value of stump on abandoned land after shifting cultivation and after traditional plantations are USD 83.05 ha -1 and USD 51.56 ha -1 respectively (Karmini et al 2020a, Karmini et al 2020b.…”

“…Many studies report the ecological aspects (Karyati et al 2013(Karyati et al , 2018Chen et al 2020;Matsuo et al 2021) and the economic aspects (Naime et al 2020;Nitanan et al 2020) of secondary forests separately. Several studies that simultaneously combine the ecological and economic aspects of several secondary forest types with different land-use histories have been reported (Matthew et al 2019;Karmini et al 2020aKarmini et al , 2020b.…”
