El presente artículo busca establecer, a la luz de un reconocimiento histórico de los distintos paradigmasproductivos e industriales, el rol que le ha correspondido jugar al Diseño como instrumento motor del desarrollo económico y de los distintos fenómenos colectivos derivados de esa contribución a la actual sociedad de consumo. Asociándolo, con un análisis crítico respecto de la posición del individuo como objeto de trabajo para el consumo y el valor relacional dado a los productos como símbolo de jerarquización y significación social. Procediendo del mismo modo, a evidenciar su fundamental aporte a los diversoslogros obtenidos bajo una matriz de tipo economicista, no obstante, sus indiscutibles contradicciones respecto de las demandas y expectativas ambientales aun parcialmente asumidas.Por lo que las conclusiones obtenidas, contribuyen a ampliar los espacios para la innovación en la práctica delDiseño, así como para la conceptualización de nuevas soluciones más allá de la acotada configuración materialde los productos; asumiendo un mayor compromiso con una nueva consciencia de consumo y en torno a una valiosa búsqueda de un paradigma económico, con marcado perfil sostenible.
El trabajo permitió establecer un panorama de diagnóstico preliminar en las condiciones presentes de algunas carreras para la formación universitaria del diseñador industrial en Chile, así como las posibilidades de implantación del ecodiseño como metodología aplicable en proyectos sostenibles. Se analizó información de distintas fuentes en torno al tema, además de los datos en una muestra de 141 estudiantes de cuatro universidades chilenas, entre el segundo y quinto año de formación regular. Esto permitió elaborar un estudio descriptivo de las variables involucradas en el reconocimiento de la temática medioambiental y las estrategias didácticas incorporadas con mayor frecuencia en proyectos de diseño.Los resultados muestran un manejo teórico relativo por parte del alumnado en torno a dichos tópicos y debilidades importantes a la hora de integrarlos de manera práctica. Se concluye con una aproximación metodológica simplificada del ecodiseño, factible de ser considerada en la enseñanza del diseño y otras disciplinas afines.
