We present H i synthesis imaging of the giant elliptical galaxy IC 1459 and its surroundings with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our search for extended H i emission revealed a large complex of H i clouds near IC 1459, likely the debris from tidal interactions with neighbouring galaxies. The total H i mass (∼ 10 9 M ) in the detected clouds spans 250 kpc from the north-east of the gas-rich spiral NGC 7418A to the south-east of IC 1459. The extent and mass of the H i debris, which shows rather irregular morphology and kinematics, are similar to those in other nearby groups. Together with H i clouds recently detected near two other IC 1459 group members, namely IC 5270 and NGC 7418, using Phased-Array Feeds (PAFs) on the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), the detected debris make up a significant fraction of the group's intergalactic medium.
We study electron correlation driven superconductivity on a decorated honeycomb lattice (DHL), which has a low-energy flat band. On doping, we find singlet superconductivity with extended-s, extended-d, and f -wave symmetry mediated by magnetic exchange. f -wave singlet pairing is enabled by the lattice decoration. The critical temperature is predicted to be significantly higher than on similar lattices lacking flat bands. We discuss how high-temperature superconductivity could be realized in the DHL materials such as Rb 3 TT • 2H 2 O and Mo 3 S 7 (dmit) 3 .
Interstellar dust grain alignment causes polarization from UV to mm wavelengths, allowing the study of the geometry and strength of the magnetic field. Over last couple of decades observations and theory have led to the establishment of the Radiative Alignment Torque (RAT) mechanism as leading candidate to explain the effect. With a quantitatively well constrained theory, polarization can be used not only to study the interstellar magnetic field, but also the dust and other environmental parameters. Photo-dissociation Regions (PDRs), with their intense, anisotropic radiation fields, consequent rapid H 2 formation, and high spatial density-contrast provide a rich environment for such studies. Here we discuss an expanded optical, NIR, and mm-wave study of the IC 63 nebula, showing strong H 2 formation-enhanced alignment and the first direct empirical evidence for disalignment due to gasgrain collisions using high-resolution HCO + (J=1-0) observations. We find that relative amount of polarization is marginally anti-correlated with column density of HCO + . However, separating the lines of sight of optical polarimetry into those behind, or in front of, a dense clump as seen from γ Cas, the distribution separates into two well defined sets, with data corresponding to "shaded" gas having a shallower slope. This is expected if the decrease in polarization is caused by collisions since collisional disalignment rate is proportional to R C ∝ n √ T . Ratios of the best-fit slopes for the "illuminated" and "shaded" samples of lines of sight agrees, within the uncertainties, with the square-root of the two-temperature H 2 excitation in the nebula seen by Thi et al. (2009).
The aim of the study was to evaluate adrenal axis hyperactivation measuring hair cortisol levels, and its influence on the relationship among metabolic parameters, inflammation markers and androgens in adult women with PCOS. 44 women (18–34 years) with PCOS diagnosis and a control group of 49 healthy women (19–35 years) were included. In both gropus body mass index (BMI) was calculated and waist circumference (WC) was measured. Hair cortisol, total serum testosterone (TT), serum cortisol, 25 OH vitamin D (25OHD), insulin, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), triglycerides (TG), HDL cholesterol (HDL), glucose and leptin were measured. Bioavailable testosterone (bioT) was calculated. Hair cortisol concentration was higher and significantly different in PCOS patients compared to the control group (130 vs 63 pg/mg of hair, p < 0.001). Subsequently, patients with PCOS were divided into two groups according to hair cortisol levels: group 1 with normal hair cortisol concentration and group 2 with levels above the upper limit of the reference values (128 pg/mg of hair). In group 2, TT significantly correlated with 25OHD, hsCRP, TG/HDL index, BMI, WC, insulin and HOMA (p < 0.05); bioT correlated with hsCRP and leptin (p < 0.05). Finally, 25OHD was inversely correlated with leptin and with TG/HDL index (p < 0.05). High hair cortisol concentration in patients with PCOS confirmed hyperactivation of the HPA axis. The associations observed were only found in patients with PCOS with high hair cortisol levels (> 128 pg/mg of hair), showing a possible effect of HPA axis in these associations.
