Chef(s) d'orchestre dans Prova d'orchestra de Federico Fellini Malika Combes 1 L'année 1979 voit la production de deux films européens qui accordent, du fait de leur sujet, un rôle de premier plan à la figure du chef d'orchestre. Le premier est Prova d'orchestra (Répétition d'orchestre) 2 de Federico Fellini, le second Dyrygent (Le Chef d'orchestre) d'Andrzej Wajda. Une telle coïncidence ne manqua pas d'interroger la critique. Celle-ci mit largement l'accent sur les dimensions morale et politique des deux films, en lien avec les contextes italien (les « années de plomb » 3) pour le premier et polonais (la montée de la révolte contre le gouvernement) pour le second. Elle les engloba ainsi dans la catégorie de l'apologue politique. Le chef d'orchestre, en tant qu'individu dépositaire de l'autorité face à un collectif, apparaît dès lors propice à une utilisation métaphorique pour évoquer la question du pouvoir. Le contexte musical ne serait-il donc qu'un simple prétexte ou arrière-plan pour parler d'autre chose ? C'est à cet avis que se rangea une majorité de commentateurs : « Pour Wajda, la musique est, comme pour Fellini, le prétexte à parler d'autre chose » ; « Après Fellini, Wajda utilise aussi l'orchestre pour traiter des problèmes d'une société face à ses contradictions nationales » ; « De l'un à l'autre de ces films on observe, relativement à l'orchestre et aux problèmes réels de la société, qu'un traitement symbolique de l'orchestre, qui en néglige dans sa lettre la réalité, correspond chaque fois à une limitation incontrôlée du propos général tenu à travers lui 4. » D'autres ont entériné cette idée en ne traitant que des aspects métaphoriques des films, laissant de côté la musique, ce que relève en le réprouvant une interview de Nino Rota, le compositeur de la bande originale du film de Fellini 5. Il est vrai que les deux réalisateurs connaissaient mal le monde de la musique, et ils ne s'en sont pas cachés. Mais, si Wajda a confirmé que son film ne s'intéressait guère à la musique-« Pour moi, la musique constituait avant tout un prétexte » 6-, la position de Fellini est plus complexe. 2 L'époque du « tout-politique » a de fait clairement influencé l'interprétation de Prova d'orchestra, sans jamais, ou presque, prendre au sérieux l'affirmation répétée de Fellini : « j'ai voulu filmer une répétition d'orchestre 7. » Une lettre du réalisateur à Georges Simenon rend compte à la fois du projet du film et de son étonnement devant les lectures « symbologiques » qu'il a suscitées :
