Vomitoxin or deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the tricothecenes (mycotoxins) which comprise a large group of protein synthesis inhibitors. These mycotoxins are also powerful immunosuppressants which may predispose animals to other disease. Vomitoxin is the most commonly found trichothecene in moldy corn, but a number of other biologically active trichothecenes are produced by the species of the fungus
Fusarium
. The prognosis for recovery from vomitoxin mycotoxicosis is excellent once an animal is removed from the contaminated food source.
