Essential oils have traditionally been used for decades to alleviate the symptoms of various mental problems. In terms of anxiolytic-like properties, lavender oil is probably the most commonly used and best-studied essential oil. Although there is compositional variance among the oils extracted from different origins, there have been few studies performed to date to investigate how these differences affect the expression of anxiolytic-like activity. This paper discusses the interspecies differences and contributions of the main constituents in the expression of anxiolytic-like effects upon inhalation, as assessed in mice by the elevated-plus maze test, by comparing the essential oils from six different species of Lavandula. The results showed qualitative and quantitative variations in the tested oils, which results in significant differences in their anxiolytic-like activities. Our findings also suggest that linalyl acetate (LA) works synergistically with linalool (LO) and that the presence of both LA and LO is essential for the whole oil to work as an inhaled anti-anxiety agent.
Pulmonary complications of ulcerative colitis (UC) are relatively rare. Generally, pulmonary lesions with cavity formation are difficult to distinguish from infections or Wegener's granulomatosis lesions. A 15-year-old female with no remarkable past medical history had multiple pulmonary nodules on chest X-ray. Since empirical treatment with wide-spectrum antibiotics did not improve her symptoms, she was transferred for further evaluation. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) scan showed multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules with cavity formation, 8-65 mm in diameter, located mainly in the right lung. She was diagnosed with UC based on sigmoidoscopy. She was treated with mesalazine and granulocyte-monocyte apheresis (GMA). Steroids were not administered, because an infectious disease could not be excluded. Seven days after starting GMA, her symptoms and laboratory findings improved, and she was discharged. After the completion of 10 courses of GMA, chest radiography and CT scan showed marked diminution of the pulmonary lesions. UC-associated pulmonary lesions can be treated without steroid administration, and we suggest that this strategy is an option for a patient with UC-associated pulmonary lesions that cannot be differentiated from an infection.
BackgroundIn Japan, the cervical cancer screening rate is extremely low. Towards improving the cervical cancer screening rate, encouraging eligible people to make an informed choice, which is a decision-making process that relies on beliefs informed by adequate information about the possible benefits and risks of screening, has attracted increased attention in the public health domain. However, there is concern that providing information on possible risks of screening might prevent deter from participating.MethodsIn total, 1,912 women aged 20–39 years who had not participated in screening in the fiscal year were selected from a Japanese urban community setting. Participants were randomly divided into 3 groups. Group A received a printed reminder with information about the possible benefits of screening, group B received a printed reminder with information about possible benefits and risks, and group C received a printed reminder with simple information only (control group).ResultsOut of 1,912 participants, 169 (8.8%) participated in cervical cancer screening. In the intervention groups, 137 (10.9%) participated in cervical cancer screening, compared to only 32 (4.9%) of the control group (p < 0.001). In addition, logistic regression analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in screening rate between group A and group B (p = 0.372).ConclusionsProviding information on the possible risks of screening may not prevent people from taking part in cervical cancer screening among a Japanese non-adherent population.
Background: To characterize patients with retained products of conception (RPOC) in placenta previa (PP), and to determine who requires transarterial embolization (TAE) and/or hysterectomy after cesarean section (CS). We focused on RPOC in PP without placenta accreta spectrum. Methods: The retrospective cohort study was performed in patients with RPOC in PP between April 2006 and June 2019 in our institute. Results: Of 498 patients with PP, RPOC were observed in 25. The median RPOC length was 4.4 cm (interquartile range: 2.8-5.7). RPOC hypervascularity was observed in 10 (10/18, 56%) patients. Of the 25 patients, an additional hemostatic intervention (TAE and/or hysterectomy) was required in 12 (48%). The duration between CS and TAE and/or hysterectomy ranged from 0-66 days. Of those, eight (8/12: 67%) patients needed the interventions on the day of surgery (day 0). Univariate analyses showed that patients having received TAE and/or hysterectomy bled more at CS (p = 0.011) and more frequently required blood transfusions at CS (p = 0.011), and were more likely to have hypervascular RPOC (p = 0.036). Conclusion: Hypervascular RPOC and bleeding episodes at CS may predict the requirement of TAE and/or hysterectomy after CS in patients with PP.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
