BackgroundIn current study we aimed to examine the effect of a low-level laser therapy on the pain, mouth opening and swelling of patients whose impacted 3rd molar tooth was extracted in addition measurement volumetrically to the edema with 3dMD face system.MethodsIt was surveyed 15 patients who had bilateral symmetric lower 3rd molars. Surgical sides of patients were randomly separated into two groups: the study group and the control group. It was applied extra oral low-level laser therapy (LLLT, 0.3 W, 40 s, 4 J/cm2) to the study group (n = 15) after the surgical operation and on the 2nd day. Only routine postoperative recommendation (ice application) was made in the control (n = 15) group. The maximum mouth opening, pain level and facial swelling evaluated. 3dMD Face® (3dMD, Atlanta, GA) Photogrammetric System was used to evaluate volumetric changes of the swelling.ResultsThere was no statistically significant difference in the edema and interincisal opening between the groups and the pain level in the laser group was significantly lower than in the control group on the 7th postoperative day.ConclusionsAlthough there were decreasing trismus, swelling, and pain level, with this LLLT, there was significant difference only in the 7th day pain level in the laser group compared with the control group.
Isolated hypodontia is the most common human malformation. It is caused by heterozygous variants in various genes, with heterozygous WNT10A variants being the most common cause. WNT10A and WNT10B are paralogs that likely evolved from a common ancestral gene after its duplication. Recently, an association of WNT10B variants with oligodontia (severe tooth agenesis) has been reported. We performed mutational analysis in our cohort of 256 unrelated Thai families with various kinds of isolated dental anomalies. In 7 families afflicted with dental anomalies we detected 4 heterozygous missense variants in WNT10B. We performed whole exome sequencing in the patients who had WNT10B mutations and found no mutations in other known hypodontia-associated genes, including WNT10A, MSX1, PAX9, EDA, AXIN2, EDAR, EDARADD, LPR6, TFAP2B, LPR6, NEMO, KRT17, and GREM2. Our findings indicate that the variants c.475G>C [p.(Ala159Pro)], found in 4 families, and c.1052G>A [p.(Arg351His)], found in 1 family, are most probably causative. They also show that WNT10B variants are associated not only with oligodontia and isolated tooth agenesis, but also with microdontia, short tooth roots, dental pulp stones, and taurodontism.
Objective: To examine the effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE; a component of honey bee-hive propolis with antioxidant, anti-inFammatory, antiviral and anticancer properties) on bone regeneration and fibrotic healing in a rat model. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n ¼ 63; mean age 7 weeks; weight 280-490 g) were randomly divided into three groups: A, cranial defect with no bone healing treatment (n ¼ 21); B, cranial defect treated with CAPE (n ¼ 21); C, cranial defect treated with CAPE and b-tricalcium phosphate/hydroxyl apatite (n ¼ 21). Rats were anaesthetized with ketamine (8 mg/100 g) by intraperitoneal injection and a cranial critical size bone defect was created. Following surgery, CAPE (10 mmol/kg) was administered by daily intraperitoneal injection. Seven rats in each group were killed at days 7, 15 and 30 following surgery. Bone regeneration, fibrotic healing and osteoblast activity were evaluated by histopathology. Results: Statistically significant differences in healing were found between all groups. There were no statistically significant within-group differences between day 7 and 15. At day 30, bone healing scores were significantly higher in groups B and C compared with group A. Conclusion: CAPE significantly improved bone-defect healing in a rat model, suggesting that CAPE has beneficial effects on bone healing.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the effects of single- and two-dose low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the postoperative swelling, trismus and pain of patients undergoing extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. In addition, edema was volumetrically measured with a 3dMD face system. A total of 45 patients were randomly divided into three treatment groups (15 patients in each group) as follows: Group 1, receiving routine management with ice application and serving as the control group; Group 2, receiving a single dose of LLLT immediately following surgery; and Group 3, receiving two doses of LLLT, immediately following surgery and on day 2 after surgery. In the present study, a gallium-aluminum-arsenide (0.3 W, 40 sec, 4 J/cm2) diode laser device was applied extraorally at the insertion point of the masseter muscle. The trismus, pain level and facial swelling of the patients were evaluated. The visual analog scale (VAS) was used to examine the pain degree, while a 3dMD face photogrammetric system was used to evaluate the volumetric alterations of the swelling. The results indicated no statistically significant differences in the mean swelling or trismus among the three groups. The mean VAS measurements did not differ significantly among the groups at postoperative day 2; however, significantly reduced VAS values were observed in Group 2 compared with Group 1 at postoperative day 7 (P<0.05). The present study demonstrated that, although single-dose or two-dose LLLT had beneficial effects on the swelling, trismus and pain level, a significant reduction was only observed in the pain level at postoperative day 7.
AimThe aim of this study is to determine the reliability of panoramic radiograph (PR) as a screening tool for the detection of calcified carotid atheroma (CCA) by comparing it with Doppler ultrasonography (DU) examination. A second aim was to evaluate the relationship among CCA, systemic diseases, smoking, and body mass index in an older population.Materials and methodsA total of 1,650 PRs of patients aged over 45 years (736 males and 914 females) were randomly selected. All the patients had been referred to the Faculty of Dentistry, Afyon Kocatepe University, Afyonkarahisar, Turkey, during 2013–2014 for routine PR screening. Medical data were collected from the archival records of the dental school. The patients were divided into two groups: Group A (study group), CCA findings were confirmed by DU (n=59); and Group B (control group), CCA findings were not confirmed by DU (n=34).ResultsOf the 1,650 individuals, 93 (5.63%) were detected to have CCA on PR. The population consisted of 43 males and 50 females with mean age of 59.84±10.92 years. No difference was determined in respect of CCA between the sexes (P=0.745). There was a significant difference between Group A and Group B in respect of hypertension (P=0.004). But there was no difference between Group A and Group B in respect of age (P=0.495), BMI (P=0.756), diabetes (P=0.168), and smoking (P=0.482) distribution.ConclusionAlthough PR cannot be used as an initial diagnostic method when searching for CCA, dentists should be aware of CCA on a routine PR, particularly in older patients who may also have the risk factors of obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and smoking. Recognizing of CCA especially in hypertensive patients could potentially increase the length and quality of life for individuals.
Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi'nde yedi farklı dental anomalinin görülme sıklığı Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesinde yaşayan bireylerde yedi farklı dental anomalinin görülme sıklığının ve cinsiyetler arasındaki dental anomali görülme yatkınlıkların değerlendirilmesidir.
