This paper examines, using various econometric techniques, the impact of intellectual capital (IC) on the performance of Egyptian insurance companies listed between 2006 and 2011. We measure IC using the value added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) approach and its components developed by Pulic (2000), and both a direct and a moderating relationship between VAIC and corporate performance are investigated. Our results show a direct relationship between (IC-VAIC) and the performance of Egyptian insurance companies, particularly with capital employed efficiency (CEE), and to a lesser extent with human capital efficiency. In addition, a positive relationship between IC (capital employed and structural capital) and performance in the prior and current years is found. Evidence also suggests the possibility of a moderating relationship between IC and physical and financial capital, which in turn impacts on corporate performance. Our study also reveals the importance of taking into account any unobservable heterogeneity and endogeneity issues when analysing corporate performance.
This article examines the effects of symbolic representation and strict disciplinary policy on how students and their parents perceive school discipline. We use data from the 2011-2012 New York City School Survey, combined with data on disciplinary actions from the Office of Civil Rights. Our results suggest that strict disciplinary actions send negative messages to students and their parents about school discipline. We find that as more strict disciplinary actions are administered within a school, students are less likely to perceive discipline as fair or legitimate. The negative effects of disciplinary actions, however, tend to be smaller in schools for which there is a closer racial match between students and teachers and, consequently, a greater likelihood of symbolic representation. We also find that passive representation influences parents' attitudes toward school discipline in their children's schools.
This paper examines the impact of parental education on child health using a reduction in the length of primary schooling in Egypt. We use a fuzzy regression discontinuity design to compare the health outcomes of children whose parents were exposed to different schooling requirements because they were born either side of a threshold date. Using data from the Demographic and Health Survey (1992-2014), we find no effect of maternal education on child mortality or nutritional status. There is some evidence, although not entirely robust, that father's education reduces the likelihood of child stunting. We find, however, that father's education has no impact on child mortality or other measures of nutritional status. We provide suggestive evidence that, given the low levels of parental education in Egypt accompanied with the inferior quality of primary schooling, education has little effect on intermediate outcomes-literacy and utilization of antenatal care-that may improve the health of offspring.
