Abstract:In the present study the phenolic (Folin-Dennis) and flavonoid (colorimetric assay) constituents and the antioxidant activity of Pterodon emarginatus seeds were investigated in several samples prepared with different extraction procedures: essential oil (EO) using a Clevenger-type apparatus; hexanic (HF), ethyl acetate (EAF), buthanolic (BF) and methanolic (MF) fractions using Soxhlet extraction, and extracts (1 g/extract) obtained from different methods: reflux 80°C/30 min, ultrasound/30 min, static maceration/48 h and heating plate 100°C/45 min. These extracts were prepared using water or ethanol/water at 30:70 v/v, 50:50 v/v or 70:30 v/v. Antioxidant activity [2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH)] was tested only in the fractions obtained from Soxhlet extraction. The extract obtained from reflux using ethanol/water (70:30, v/v) showed the highest phenolic constituents level. The EAF, BF and MF showed DPPH scavenging activities with IC 50 =163.22, 18.89 and 10.15 μg/ml, respectively.
Unitermos: Zanthoxylum chiloperone, atividade antinociceptiva, atividade antiinfl amatória.ABSTRACT: "Pharmacological activities of Zanthoxylum chiloperone (Rutaceae) extracts". In this work the antinociceptive and anti-infl ammatory activities of the extracts of leaves from Zanthoxylum chiloperone were evaluated. The tests were carried out by acetic acid writhing, formalin-induced paw licking, carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and pleurisy methods, using hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts administered in the doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg. The doses inhibited, signifi cantly, the contortions, the paw lick, the paw edema, the volume of the exsudate and the leukocytes migration. These results suggest that the extracts from Z. chiloperone possess constituents with antinociceptive and anti-infl ammatory activities.

This work aimed to analyze the secretory ducts and the essential oil of the leaves of Foeniculum vulgare in different periods of the year. For this purpose, the anatomic characterization, and histochemical tests of the leaves were performed as well as the comparative anatomy of the secretory ducts. The essential oil was obtained from the leaves and fruits by hidrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer, each analysis was repeated three times for leaves collected during the winter and spring, and for fruits collected in the Summer. The results obtained for the secretory ducts, corresponded to the yield reduction of essential oil in the leaves collected in the end of the spring. The major substance of the essential oil of the leaves and fruits, in all seasons of the year was trans-anetol. Therefore, it was evidenced that the secretory ducts and yield of essential oils are related, and also that the substances are subject to the seasonality, according to the phenologic stage of the plant. Keywords: Foeniculum vulgare, seasonality, secretory ducts, essential oil.
Unitermos: Xarope, guaco, temperatura, cumarina, Mikania glomerata, Asteraceae ABSTRACT: "Coumarin content of guaco syrup stored at different temperatures". The production of guaco syrup, obtained from guaco (Mikania glomerata Spreng., Asteraceae) fluid extract, and commercialized by the University Pharmacy of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora-MG, Brazil, led to a research project whose main aim was to study the stability of the finished product, with reference to the coumarin content of samples stored at different temperatures. UV spectrophotometry (275.4 nm) was used to assess the coumarin content of the study syrup. An 80% v/v methanol/distilled water mixture was used for sample dilution. The calibration curve was constructed by the dilution of 100 mg standard coumarin in 100 ml of the aforementioned solution, with seven distinct concentrations (ranging from 2 µg a 20 µg) being obtained. The results showed the 45 °C storage temperature to be optimum for the development of trans-cis isomerization, with subsequent conversion of the latter into coumarin. Coumarin content in the studied pharmaceutical presentation ranged from 1.19 to 1.37 mg/mL, the highest value corresponding to the samples stored at 45 °C for six months. This work makes an assessment of the dominant lethality of Mikania glomerata in male Wistar rats. Adult male received 1 mL of M. glomerata hydroalcoholic extract at a dose level of 3.3 g/kg body weight for 52 days and were mated with untreated females for seven weeks (group 1) or one week prior to the beginning of treatment and on the week following the end of treatment (group 2). The parameters analyzed were: number of implanted embryos, resorptions and corpora lutea; mating, gestation, preimplantation loss, implantation and resorption indexes (group 1); number of offspring and weaning animals (group 2). The administration of M. glomerata did not show any impairment of fertility and no significant difference in the parameters analyzed, suggesting an absence of mutagenic effect on Wistar rats.
