In order to investigate skeletal deviation in patients with internal derangement of the TMJ, facial asymmetry was examined by the frontal cephalogram and compared with a control group of asymptomatic subjects. It was demonstrated that mandibular lateral displacement in the patients was significantly greater than that in the controls. The degree of displacement was significantly related to the cant of the frontal occlusal plane and the frontal mandibular plane, indicating the reduced vertical dimension of the posterior occlusal level and the ramus height on the mandibular displaced side. It is concluded that facial asymmetry due to mandibular lateral displacement is a relatively common problem in patients with internal derangement of TMJ. The cant of the frontal occlusal plane seems to be an important occlusal characteristic related to temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
Photodamaged skin exhibits wrinkles, pigmented spots, dryness and tumors. Solar UV radiation induces cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) and further produces base oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are thought to be a major factor to initiate the up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in keratinocytes and fibroblasts via activation of receptor proteins on the cell membrane of keratinocytes and fibroblasts, and to degrade fiber components in dermis, leading to wrinkle formation. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was reported to reduce ROS production and DNA damage triggered by UVA irradiation in human keratinocytes in vitro. Further, CoQ10 was shown to reduce UVA-induced MMPs in cultured human dermal fibroblasts. We speculated that UVB radiation-induced cytokine production in keratinocytes may be inhibited by CoQ10, resulting in the reduction of MMPs in fibroblasts leading to wrinkle reduction. Our in vitro studies showed that UVB-induced IL-6 production of normal human keratinocyte (NHKC) decreased in the presence of CoQ10. Furthermore, MMP-1 production of fibroblasts cultured with the medium containing CoQ10 collected from UVB-irradiated NHKC significantly decreased during 24 h culture. In the clinical trial study, we found that the use of 1% CoQ10 cream for five months reduced wrinkle score grade observed by a dermatologist. Taken together, our results indicate that CoQ10 may inhibit the production of IL-6 which stimulate fibroblasts in dermis by paracrine manner to up-regulate MMPs production, and contribute to protecting dermal fiber components from degradation, leading to rejuvenation of wrinkled skin.
The results show carotid calcifications detected on panoramic radiographs can be used to help predict vascular strokes in patients. In cases where calcified carotid artery atheromas are detected, the dentist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon should refer the patient to a specialized physician.
Gene delivery via transferrin receptors, which are highly expressed by cancer cells, can be used to enhance the effectiveness of gene therapy for cancer. In this study, we examined the efficacy of p53 gene therapy in human osteosarcoma (HOSM-1) cells derived from the oral cavity using a cationic liposome supplemented with transferrin. HOSM-1 cells were exposed to transferrin-liposome-p53 in vitro, and the growth inhibition rate, expression of p53 and bax, and induction of apoptosis were measured 48 hours later. Treatment of HOSM-1 cells with transferrinliposome-p53 resulted in 60.7% growth inhibition. Wildtype p53 expression and an increase in bax expression were observed following transfection with transferrinliposome-p53, and 20.5% of the treated HOSM-1 cells were apoptotic. In vivo, the HOSM-1 tumor transplanted into nude mice grew to 5 to 6 mm in diameter. Following growth of the tumor to this size, transferrin-liposome-p53 was locally applied to the peripheral tumor (day 0) and then applied once every 5 days for a total of six times. During the administration period, tumor growth did not occur, and the mean tumor volume on the last day of administration (day 25) was 10.0% of that in the saline control group. These results suggest that p53 gene therapy via cationic liposome modification with transferrin is an effective strategy for treatment of osteosarcoma. [Mol Cancer Ther 2005;4(4):625 -31]
