Die Reaktion des Butanolids (I) mit den Na‐alkoholaten (II) in den entsprechenden Alkoholen ergibt ein Gemisch der beiden isomeren Oxetane (III), der Ester (IV) und der cis‐ bzw. trans‐Lactone (V).
Ein cis‐trans‐Gemisch des Brombutanolids (I) wird mit siedendem K(Na)‐carbonat‐Wasser zum K(Na)‐Salz der 2,4‐Dihydroxy‐valeriansäure hydrolysiert; beim Einengen der so erhaltenen Lösung nach Zusatz von HBr entsteht ein 1:1‐cistrans‐Gemisch des Hydroxybutanolids (II) (Ausbeute 70‐75%).
Die Bromierung des Butanolids (II) in Gegenwart von PBr3 liefert bei 120 bis 125°C ein cis‐trans‐Gemisch (25 : 75) der Monobromide (I) (80% Gesamtausbeute) und bei 190‐200°C mit der doppelten Menge Brom das Dibromid (III) (40%).
