Different testing methods to measure solidity and dry matter content of onion bulbs were examined. The correlation coefficients between the characters determined were calculated. No strong correlations were found between the results of the different methods of measuring solidity. The refraction value of the press juice gives reliable information on the dry matter content of the onion bulb.
Some male sterile plants were found in seed fields of cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and white cabbage. In all 3 crops the male sterile flowers were characterized by shorter stamens and shrivelled anthers. Male sterility did not seem to be greatly influenced by the environment.In cauliflower male sterility is determined by 1 recessive factor. In Brussels sprouts this characteristic also depends on recessive factors. In this crop, however, the mode of inheritance is much more complicated. In addition to completely male sterile plants there were also partially male sterile plants of Brussels sprouts.Two plants of white cabbage were found to be male and female sterile.
Growth analyses were carried out on young plants of 15 genotypes, grown initially at 19/14 degrees C day/night temperatures for an 8 h day at low light intensity and subsequently at the night temperatures of 6, 10 and 14 degrees C. Significant genotypic differences occurred for relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf weight ratio (LWR). RGR, LAR and SLA increased and LWR decreased at higher night temperatures. A strong negative correlation was observed between NAR and LAR and NAR and SLA whilst a positive correlation was noted between LAR and SLA. Plant weight was strongly influenced by seed size. In order to investigate the inheritance of flower colour in tulips, seven cultivars were crossed and selfed in a diallel . Of these parents and their F,'s the relative amounts of carotenoids, delphinidin, cyanidin, pelargonidin, quercetin and kaempferol were determined .For delphinidin, quercetin and kaempferol only additive gene action was determined, and for carotenoids, cyanidin and pelargonidin also non-additive gene action and plasmic differences .Biosynthesis of delphinidin and pelargonidin was only found when cyanidin was present, while synthesis of delphinidin and pelargonidin was antagonistic .
