SummaryA porous polymer is deposited on the inner wall of fused silica capillary columns. The retention characteristics of this porous polymer were evaluated and found to be comparable with Porapak Q. The porous polymer has a high retention volume which enables the separation of permanent gases at ambient temperatures or higher. The hydrophobic character of the porous polymer allows the injection of water containing samples without changing retention due to adsorption of water. The inertness of the porous polymer allows the elution of a range of apolar and polar compounds. The maximum temperature of the porouspolymerwasestimatedtobe250'C.With thisnewtypeof capillary column, high resolution separations are obtained in combination with short analysis times.
SummaryEighty one polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and nineteen chlorinated pesticide standards have been analyzed on a newly developed apolar high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC) column. Emphasis was placed on the determination of PCB indicator congeners which are part of national regulations, and of toxic coplanar PCB congeners. The new column enables almost unambiguous quantification of the PCB indicator congeners (PCB 138 can be separated from both PCB 163 and PCB 164; PCB 28 and PCB 31 were also separated and no coelution was observed for PCB 52, PCB 118, and PCB 180). The new column furnished better results than CP-SiI 8 for the analysis of PCB indicator congeners in a sample of seal blubber.
SummaryA new PLOT column (CP-LOWOX) designed specifically for the analysis of oxygenated compounds has been used for the gas chromatographic determination of semi-volatile carbonyl compounds. The separation behavior of the new column was investigated by comparing it with the widely used non-polar polydimethylsiloxane and polar poly(ethylene glycol) columns. The CP-LOWOX column has unique selectivity for aldehydes and ketones enabling a selective separation of these analytes from predominating hydrocarbon matrices. Application of the CP-LOWOX column for the analysis of polar compounds in ambient air is demonstrated. Sampling was performed by adsorptive enrichment coupled with thermal desorption. The suitability ofTenax TA and a multi-bed adsorbent trap Carbotrap C and Carbotrap) was tested for the sampling of semivolatile carbonyl compounds.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
