En el marco de un estudio más amplio sobre la maternidad en solitario, seleccionamos a la submuestra de 24 madres solteras que nunca habían convivido con el padre para analizar sus circunstancias vitales, la vivencia de su situación como madres solas y el ajuste psicológico de sus hijas e hijos, todos ellos en edad de escuela primaria. Las comparamos con una muestra de 143 madres casadas y con 128 madres solas en otras circunstancias (divorciadas y viudas). Los resultados muestran que las madres solteras son las madres solas que presentan situaciones económicas y laborales más precarias, así como menores índices de hogares independientes. No obstante, la valoración que realizan de su experiencia es básicamente positiva y no parecen estar en peor situación emocional que las madres casadas y el resto de las madres solas. Asimismo, el ajuste de sus hijas e hijos prácticamente no difiere ni del ajuste infantil que aparece en las familias de otras madres solas ni del de los hogares de madres casadas.
