Lithium salts have been used since 1966 in the Psychiatric Departement,
University of Vienna Medical School. The therapeutic effect of lithium salts was evaluated
on 119 patients. Statistically significant prolongation of the cycle was observed. The cycle is
defined as the time between the onset of one depressive phase until the onset of the next.
The analysis of variances showed a significant correlation between duration of therapy and
therapeutic effect. Schizoaffective disorders and chronified depressions were treated by a
combination of lithium salts and thyroid hormones. With this combination, better therapeutic
results could be achieved. Besides, the combination of lithium salts and thyroid
hormone is contra-acting the strumigenious effect of lithium salts.
