Three popular surgical techniques for the treatment of postanal (pilonidal) sinus disease have been evaluated. The lay‐open technique appears to have several advantages over the open excision and the primary closure methods.
As the aetiology of this condition is still disputed, and as a result of clinical facts obtained from this study, it is suggested that it be known as a postanal sinus rather than as a pilonidal sinus.
A technique of internal anal sphincterotomy for anal fissure by the mid‐lateral subcutaneous route is described.
The operation avoids the “key‐hole” deformity which occasionally follows the standard midposterior sphincterotomy.
Lateral subcutaneous internal sphincterotomy resulted in rapid healing of the fissure with little discomfort and disturbance of anal function.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
