For the past decade, the Prince William Sound Science Center has studied the role of herring in Alaskan ecosystems, including its vulnerability to damage from oil spills. The research techniques have centered on application of scientific acoustic technologies, hut more recently have incorporated infrared scanners and underwater cameras. The combined techniques have provided a powerful suite of tools that have demonstrated the critical role of herring as forage for many marine birds and mammals, including the endangered western population of Steller sea lions.
