Vukica Jovanovic, Ph.D., began her academic career in 2001 when she graduated with her dipl.ing.-M.S. degree at University of Novi Sad, majoring in industrial engineering and focusing on mechatronics, robotics, and automation. She lectured various courses at departments of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics from 2001 until 2006. She was an active member of a European organizing committee of the student robotic contest Eurobot and chief of the Eurobot organizing committee of the Serbian student national competition in robotics. In the summer of 2002, she had an internship in aircraft manufacturing company Aernnova Aerospace, Spain, where she worked in assembly of aircraft wings. Jovanovic subsequently continued to work towards her doctorate at Purdue University, Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology in Aug. 2006, as a Graduate Research Assistant in Product Lifecycle Management Centre of Excellence Laboratory. As a graduate student, she was involved in the following projects: Boeing PLM Certificate Program, Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation Project: Product Lifecycle Management Curriculum Modules, National Science Foundation project: Midwest Coalition for Comprehensive Design Education, and Department of Laborfunded project: Development of Integrated Digital Manufacturing Curriculum. She was also lecturing six different courses in the areas of mechanical engineering technology and computer graphics technology. She published chapters in three books, three journal articles, and presented 31 conference papers. Her dissertation research focused on environmental compliance, product lifecycle management, and engineering design of mechatronic products. She is working at the Design Engineering Technology Department at Trine University, where she teaches courses related to engineering graphics and design.
The National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE) is a recently funded National Science Foundation Center for Learning and Teaching. This paper provides a broad overview of NCETE activities that will span the five years of the program, consistent with the goals of ASEE's Emerging Trends in Engineering Education session. The long-term goal of NCETE is to understand how to infuse engineering design into technology education in grades 9-12. The paper describes the relationship between engineering and technology education and why NCETE focuses on 9-12 grade technology education as the provider of engineering design concepts. The nine institutions associated with NCETE, the school district partners, and the professional society partners are described. The paper also presents a broad overview of research themes with a description of how these themes will be more sharply focused over the next five years. The paper briefly outlines the doctoral program and the technology teacher program. It concludes by describing some first year goals.
Prior to joining ODU's Engineering Technology Department Dr. Jovanovic was teaching at Trine University, Angola, Indiana at Design Engineering Technology Department. Before Trine, she was working as an instructor and a graduate research assistant at Product Lifecycle Management Center of Excellence at Purdue University. She also served as instructor in STEM Academic Boot Camp, Diversity Program. Prior to joining Purdue, Dr. Jovanovic worked as a faculty at University of Novi Sad at departments of Industrial Engineering and Management. Dr. Jovanovic received M.Eng. (dipl.ing.) degree from University of Novi Sad, Serbia in Robotics, Mechatronics and Automation and M.Sc. (Magistar) degree in Production Systems Design, both at Department of Industrial Engineering. She received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University. In addition, Dr. Jovanovic's scholarly publications include 50 journal articles and papers in conference proceedings, two technical reports, and seven poster presentations focusing on mechatronics, product identification, product lifecycle management, assembly systems, collaborative engineering, automation, and energy efficiency. She was active member of European Robotic Association EUROBOT, and currently serves as a co-advisor of ODU IEEE Car Team. She had internships in engineering services, aerospace, and power generation industries.
