A recent survey of epiphytic lichens in the Jardin du Luxembourg has shown there to be a marked improvement in the air quality of Paris over the past decade. Recolonization by at least 11 lichen species has occurred during that period. It has taken almost 100 years for epiphytic lichens to re-establish in the Jardin du Luxembourg, where William Nylander in the 1890s was able to amply confirm his far reaching hypothesis, made 30 years earlier, on the direct relationship between lichen survival and air pollution.
Observations concerning morphology, structure, and ontogeny of the thallus of a squamulous species, Endocarpon pusillum Hedw., are presented. The latter is composed of squamules, most of which are interconnected by a well developed network of rhizomorphs. Four types of squamules have been distinguished according to their morphological characters and their location with regard to rhizomorphs. The squamules of E. pusillum are characterized by the lack of lacunae and the presence of numerous rhizomorphic-like hyphae in the medulla, which are in topographical relation with the hyphae of the rhizomorphs. Morphological and structural data allowed us to follow an ontogenic continuum from the smallest squamules, i.e. the least differentiated, to the one bearing fruiting-bodies, which show numerous rhizomorphs.
Summary. -The Fungi of the Lichens have got very varions origins, but the most important are, by far, those of the Discolichens. They are Inoperculate Discomycetes forming a particular group ; their ontogenesis and their asci show that they have evolved from a very peculiar ancestral type, placed at the very bottom of the phylogenesis of the Discomycetes. The Graphidales are less evolved than the Lecanorales ; beside them, the Pertnsaria, Baeomyces and Cladonia have undergone special evolutions. At !east part of the Fungi of the Pyrenolichens also perhaps belong to the same group of Discomyceles, despite the aspect of tbeir fructifications.A.
