This paper will carry out a comparison between the data and discussions on the practices and attitudes surrounding child death at Rio de Janeiro and England in the nineteenth century. Considering the radical diversity that a first reading suggests between them and the existence of studies for both, it will seek a better capture of the specificity in each one and review some general hypotheses about the evolution of sensitivity on childhood in the West.
The analytical strategy adopted by the author focuses on the identification, in the photographic material, of the elements that constituted the practices and representations relating to deceased children, the origins of which are far older than the practice of photographing "angels". Likewise, he looks into the elements associated with the changes that took place in this sphere during the second half of the 19 th century, which he believes accompanied and fostered not only the advent but also the extinction of this custom.
ABSTRACTThis article intends to show that travel writings are very important for the study of childhood and death in Brazil during the nineteenth century, because they describes "little angels"'funerals. A critical reading of theses accounts allows us to see beyond travellers'misconceptions, specially concerning the idea that children were considered unimportant in Brazilian society.
