Colombia es uno de los países que se caracteriza por una alta variabilidad espacio – temporal de los parámetros hidroclimatológicos definida por un abanico de diferentes fenómenos macro climáticos. Uno de estos es el fenómeno de la Oscilación Cuasi-Bienal que ha sido poco estudiado en el contexto nacional. En el estudio se llegó a obtener la incidencia de este fenómeno sobre el régimen hídrico de los afluentes del embalse Betania los cuales son importante desde el punto de vista de la producción de hidroenergía y las actividades agropecuarias de la zona. Durante la investigación se encontró que el evento macro climático logra manifestarse en un periodo de 4 a 7 meses y su aporte a la variabilidad interanual de caudales es hasta el 13.7 %, teniendo en cuenta que las intervenciones antrópicas en la zona afectan los niveles de los caudales donde se ven reflejados los resultados al obtener las correlaciones.
La ocupación humana y sus actividades productivas dan lugar a los cambios de las coberturas, que afectan los servicios ecosistémicos y específicamente los servicios de regulación hídrica. La cuenca alta del río Chinchiná, es una cuenca que ha presentado cambios en sus coberturas vegetales y este cambio afecto su sistema de regulación hídrica, a esta conclusión se llegó realizando el análisis multitemporal de las coberturas y el análisis hidrológico a través de la construcción de las curvas de duración de caudales para los años con información geoespacial. Entre los resultados se encontró que, por sus condiciones iniciales en las características del suelo y las coberturas vegetales, la cuenca alta del río Chinchiná no tiene una buena capacidad de regulación de la escorrentía superficial, echo que se agrava por las dinámicas de expansión de las coberturas herbáceas y de pastos durante los años del estudio. El conocimiento de la relación entre los cambios de coberturas y la regulación de la escorrentía superficial, permite proyectar el uso adecuado de la tierra con el propósito de no afectar aún más la capacidad de regulación de la escorrentía superficial que sirve como fundamento de la biodiversidad, abastecimiento de la ciudad de Manizales.
La deforestación es un proceso que ha aumentado en diferentes zonas del mundo que corresponde directamente a las actividades humana, este es uno de los factores que afectan a la regulación de las cuencas hídricas. El objetivo es el desarrollar una metodología para hacer la evaluación entre esta actividad y el índice de la regulación hídrica ver la incidencia que tiene sobre una cuenca hidrográfica que contiene el PPN las Orquídeas. Contrastando la evaluación de regulación hídrica y el estudio multitemporal de coberturas siguiendo la metodología Corine Land Cover adaptada para Colombia hasta un tercer nivel evaluando diez coberturas. Se identifica el cambio de coberturas nos tiene ninguna incidencia sobre la cuenca.
