We evaluated the toxicity of a semipurified extract (EPA fraction, containing caffeine and several flavan-3-ols and proanthocyanidins) of seeds of the native Amazon plant Paullinia cupana (guaraná) in rodents. Acute toxicity was tested in male Swiss mice, which received different doses orally (OR) and intraperitoneally (ip); control groups received water. These tests produced acute mortality, with LD(50) of 1.825 g/kg (OR) and 0.827 g/kg (ip), and a significant weight decrease in lungs of mice receiving a dose of 0.1g/kg. In the repeated-dose toxicity test, the EPA was administered OR daily to male and female Wistar rats at doses of 30, 150, and 300 mg/kg/day/90 days. Their behavior, mortality, weight changes, laboratory tests, and the weights and histopathology of organs were evaluated. No rats died during the tests. Males dosed at 150 or 300 mg/kg gained weight more slowly and lost kidney weight (absolute and relative weights, compared to the control group). Hematological and biochemical tests showed few changes, differing somewhat between males and females; the histopathological evaluation indicated no significant changes. These results indicate that the EPA fraction of guaraná caused no toxicity in rats at the smallest dose evaluated (30 mg/kg). No other species was evaluated.

Mach. (Malpighiaceae)". The roots of Heteropteris aphrodisiaca, called "nó-de-cachorro" (dog-knot) for their morphological similarity to the canine penis, are used in popular medicine as an aphrodisiac or stimulant, and to treat dysentery. The objective of the present study was to characterize these roots morphoanatomically and physico-chemically. For the analyses, histological slides were prepared, and aqueous, hydro-ethanol, and ketone extracts were analyzed, from root samples collected in the state of Mato Grosso, in different seasons of the year. The roots are tuberous, cylindrical, and covered with a striated suber. The cortex, composed of parenchymatous tissue, has no sclerifi ed elements, but shows abundant druses and prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, as well as idioblasts containing polyphenols. In the secondary xylem, gelatinous fi bers are abundant, typical for the roots of species of the Brazilian cerrado (savanna). The physical and chemical analyses revealed greater losses through desiccation in the samples collected in spring and summer. Water was the best extraction liquid. Total ash content of the samples ranged from 3.4% in summer to 5.3% in autumn. Total phenol content was higher in spring (10.2%), suggesting this season as the most appropriate to harvest the plant drug. Chromatographic analyses through TLC and HPLC were employed using the fl avonoids neoastilbin, astilbin, and isoastilbin as markers.

A pharmacological assessment of the standardized extract (BNT-08) of Pfaffia glomerata roots was performed in young mice submitted to acute treatment with several doses (i.p.), in young and old mice submitted to chronic oral treatment for 150 days or with water (control groups) and in old mice at a dose of 100 mg/kg of extract. Acute tests involved an initial screening, spontaneous movements, rota-rod, barbiturate sleeping time and passive avoidance were carried out. The chronic test involved mortality assessment, body weight and learning and memory in a T-maze left/right discrimination test and in the passive avoidance model. Of the acute tests only the sleeping time test showed relevant differences between the groups. With the chronic treatment, a relevant decrease of the number of sessions necessary for learning in the group of old mice treated with the extract was evident. A partial reversal of the memory deficit induced by age in the old mice treated with the extract was found in the passive avoidance test. The results suggest that the standardized extract from Pfaffia glomerata roots promoted an increase in both learning and memory of old mice treated in the chronic test.

Bioguided fractionation of a hydroethanolic extract from the stem bark of Croton echioides Baill. led to isolation of the new indole alkaloid N-trans-feruloyl-3,5-dihydroxyindolin-2-one as a stereoisomeric mixture and the known alkaloids N-trans-p-coumaroyl-tryptamine, N-trans-pcoumaroyl-5-hydroxytryptamine, N-trans-4-methoxy-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxytryptamine, N-transferuloyl-5-hydroxytryptamine (moschamine), from the ethyl acetate fraction. The flavonoids 3-o-methyl kaempferol, 3-o-methyl quercetin, 3,7-di-o-methyl quercetin and 3,3'-di-o-methyl quercetin, together with the benzoic acid derivatives 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid were also isolated. Alkaloids and the flavonoids showed strong antioxidant properties in vitro radical scavenging assay (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH), with IC 50 values ranging from 9.2 to 17.5 µmol L

Recebido em 22/9/09; aceito em 28/1/10; publicado na web em 3/5/10 A sensitive RP-HPLC method with UV detection successfully measured phenol(s) in an ointment containing 3% Stryphnodendron adstringens extract. Chromatography used acetonitrile (0.05% trifluoroacetic acid):water (0.05% trifluoroacetic acid) (v/v), flow rate 0.8 mL min -1 . Quantitation was accomplished by the external-standard method. Linearity for 2.00 to 16.00 mg mL -1 (gallic acid) and 1.14 to 18.24 mg mL -1 (gallocatechin) was established. Intra-and inter-day precision levels were under 5%. LOD and LOQ were 0.231 and 0.770 mg mL -1 (gallic acid) and 0.151 and 0.504 mg mL -1 (gallocatechin), respectively. Determination of phenols was unaffected by product excipients.

Descrevem-se os achados clínico, cirúrgico e anatomopatológico de intussuscepção em quatro bovinos fêmeas. Observaram-se intussuscepção do jejuno, com obstrução total, em três animais, e intussuscepção do cólon, com obstrução parcial, em um animal. A presença de parasitismo intenso por Oesophagostomum sp. em dois animais sugere a participação desse parasita na gênese da intussuscepção.
