Wprowadzenie. Prognozy demograficzne wskazujące wzrost populacji osób starszych skłaniają do poznania związku między zmiennymi demograficzno-społecznymi a występowaniem uzależnień od palenia tytoniu czy picia alkoholu, nie tylko ze względu na negatywny wpływ na stan zdrowia, ale również konsekwencje społeczne. Cel. Poznanie związku między zmiennymi demograficzno-społecznymi a paleniem tytoniu i piciem alkoholu przez osoby starsze. Materiał i metody. W badaniu posłużono się metryczką pytań demograficzno-społecznych oraz kwestionariuszami: Alkoholowym Michigeńskim Testem Przesiewowym -Wersja Geriatryczna (Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test -Geriatric Version, S-MAST-G) i testem Rozpoznawania Zaburzeń Związanych z Piciem Alkoholu -AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). Badanie przeprowadzono wśród 100 osób po 60. roku życia. Wyniki. Wśród badanych 21% paliło tytoń, problemy z alkoholem częściej przejawiali mężczyźni niż kobiety (40% vs 8%, p<0,0001), a stopień uzależnień czy picia szkodliwego zmniejszał się wraz z wiekiem badanych (p=0,016). Wnioski. Uzależnienie oraz picie szkodliwe alkoholu przez osoby starsze warunkuje wiek, stan cywilny oraz źródło utrzymania. Stopnień uzależnienia od nikotyny wśród osób starszych zmniejsza się wraz z wiekiem. Źródło utrzymania jest silnym predykatorem palenia tytoniu.
