IntroductionSocio-demographic forecasts indicate a stable increase in the population of elderly people, which gives rise to the need to examine the relationship between the acceptance of chronic illness and socio-demographic variables not only in terms of subjective negative emotions but also because of possible social consequences. The acceptance of a chronic disease is determined by factors related to its character including its severity and the discomfort it brings about but also by factors connected with the patient that is socio-demographic determinants. Objective: The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between socio-demographic variables and the acceptance of a chronic disease of locomotive organs.Material and methodsThe study was conducted in the group of 150 patients diagnosed with a systemic connective tissue disease during its stable phase. A socio-demographic questionnaire as well as a standardised Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS) adapted by Juszczyński were applied in the study. The study was conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Declaration of Helsinki.ResultsIn the group of 150 patients suffering from a systemic connective tissue disease the percentage of women was higher than the percentage of men (60.7% vs. 39.3%). The indicator of the acceptance of illness in the group examined reached 24.5 ±7.5. The strongest correlation was found between the acceptance level and married probants (eta = 0.26; p = 0.01), high education (eta = 0.24; p = 0.04) and working activity (eta = 0.20; p = 0.01).ConclusionsSocio-demographic factors which determine the level of illness acceptance include age, marital status, education and the source of income. The acceptance of illness in the examined group of patients with systemic connective tissue diseases reached 24.5.

Background Chronic pain in older people is of particular importance not only with regard to negative subjective experience but also as an indicator of the quality of medical care. Brief scales to assess pain may help health professionals with early recognition and treatment to avoid patient suffering. However, these scales should be adapted to the cultural context to provide valid assessments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Polish translation of the Geriatric Pain Measure – 24 (GPM-24) in older people. Methods The study was conducted among 181 people aged 65 and over with chronic (noncancer) pain of varying intensity lasting more than 6 months. Construct validity was assessed using the principal component analysis (PCA) method with oblimin rotation. Criterion validity was evaluated by correlating the scores of the GPM-24 with the scores of the McGill-Melzack questionnaire (MPQ). The reliability of the GPM-24 was estimated in terms of internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. Results The PCA revealed a 6- component structure of the set of items that constituted the GPM-24. Most of these components were defined by items included in the same subscale, similar to the result obtained by the original scale’s authors. There were significant correlations between the GPM-24 and some dimensions of MPQ: affective (rho = 0.25, p = 0.001), present pain intensity (rho = 0.44, p < 0.001), pain rating index total (rho = 0.31, p < 0.001), and number of words chosen (rho = 0.26, p < 0.001). The value of the standardized Cronbach’s alpha equalled 0.89 and thus confirmed the high reliability of the GPM-24. Conclusions The Geriatric Pain Measure − 24 is a reliable and valid tool that is recommended for the monitoring and multidimensional assessment of chronic pain in older people in daily practice as well as in clinical trials. Introduction: Psychosocial problems affecting elderly people have become particularly meaningful not only because of health considerations but also because of their significant social consequences. Aim of the research: To assess psychosocial problems among elderly people suffering from chronic diseases, according to the PCH-R scale. Material and methods: The study was conducted in a group of 150 chronic elderly patients following the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. A socio-demographic questionnaire and the PCH-R scale assessing psychosocial problems were applied. Results: An analysis of eta correlations between the subjects gender and their psychosocial problems showed statistically significant correlations between personality, social, and occupational spheres. The average level of problems within the personality, social, and occupational spheres was statistically significantly higher in women than in men. Gender accounted for 4% of the variance in results in personality, social, and occupational spheres but only 0.4% of the variance in the family sphere. The study showed a statistically significant negative correlation between age and psychosocial problems in all spheres. Conclusions: Psychosocial problems of older people are influenced by their gender (in personality, family, and occupational spheres women reported a higher intensity of psychosocial problems) and age (in personality, family, social, and occupational spheres the intensity of psychosocial problems decreased with age). Psychosocial problems of elderly people tend to interact with one another. Streszczenie Wprowadzenie: Psychospołeczne problemy osób starszych nabrały szczególnego znaczenia nie tylko ze względu na uwarunkowania zdrowotne, lecz także konsekwencje społeczne. Cel pracy: Ocena psychospołecznych problemów osób starszych przewlekle chorych wg skali PCH-R. Materiał i metody: W badaniu wzięło udział 150 osób starszych przewlekle chorych. Przeprowadzono je zgodnie z zasadami zawartymi w Deklaracji helsińskiej. W badaniu posłużono się metryczką pytań dotyczących zagadnień demograficzno-społecznych oraz Skalą problemów psychospołecznych osób przewlekle chorych (PCH-R). Wyniki: Analiza korelacji Eta między płcią a problemami psychospołecznymi osób starszych wykazała istotną statystycznie zależność w sferze osobowościowej, społecznej i zajęciowej. Średnia poziomu problemów psychospołecznych badanych osób starszych w poszczególnych sferach była istotnie wyższa w sferze osobowościowej, społecznej, zajęciowej u kobiet niż u mężczyzn. Płeć wyjaśnia 4% wariancji wyników sfery osobowościowej, rodzinnej i zajęciowej, a tylko 0,4% wariancji wyników sfery rodzinnej. Stwierdzono statystycznie istotną ujemną korelację między wiekiem badanych osób a problemami psychospołecznymi we wszystkich sferach skali PCH-R. ozpoznawanie uzależnień od alkoholu i tytoniu wśród osób starszych Diagnosing addictions to alcohol and nicotine among elderly people STRESZCZENIE Wstęp. Postępujący proces starzenia się społeczeństwa skłania do zadania pytania o częstość występowania uzależnień, nie tylko ze względu na negatywny wpływ na stan zdrowia, ale również ze względu na konsekwencje społeczne. Cel. Calem pracy było rozpoznanie uzależnień od alkoholu i tytoniu u osób starszych. Materiał i metody. Badanie przeprowadzono wśród 100 osób po 60. roku życia. W badaniu posłużono się metryczką pytań demograficzno-społecznych własnej konstrukcji oraz kwestionariuszami: Tolerancji Nikotyny Fagerströma (FTND), Rozpoznawania Zaburzeń Związanych z Piciem Alkoholu (AUDIT), Krótkim Alkoholowym Michigeńskim Testem Przesiewowym -Wersja Geriatryczna (S-MAST-G). Wyniki. Wśród badanych 21% paliło tytoń, mężczyźni częściej niż kobiety palili (25% vs. 17%) i wykazywali wyższy stopień uzależnienia. Problemy z alkoholem wykazano u co czwartej badanej osoby (23%). Mężczyźni częściej niż kobiety wykazywali obecność problemów alkoholowych (p = 0,0001). Tylko mężczyźni wykazywali picie alkoholu ryzykowne i szkodliwe, ponad połowa badanych kobiet wykazała picie o niskim ryzyku (p = 0,04). Osoby niepalące tytoń w większości nie miały problemów alkoholowych. Wśród osób palących tytoń wykazano problem z alkoholem (p = 0,0007) oraz objawy picia szkodliwego (p = 0,006). Wnioski. Płeć stanowi predyktor w identyfikowaniu uzależnień u osób starszych, tylko mężczyźni wykazali picie alkoholu ryzykowne i szkodliwe. Współwystępowanie uzależnień od tytoniu i alkoholu stanowi problem zdrowotny osób starszych, których należy systematycznie motywować do zmiany zachowań oraz wspierać odpowiednią terapią.
