This study aimed at evaluating the influence of a silvopastoral system (SPS) composed of ''Aroeira'' trees (Myracrodruon urundeuva) on the nutritional value of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu forage grass over the rainy season. The experiment was conducted in the SPS located in the ''Cerrado'' biome in Lagoa Santa County, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, in the agricultural year of 2004-2005. It was evaluated the influence of ''Aroeira'', whose density in the area was 140 trees/ha, on the following parameters of the B. brizantha cv. Marandu forage grass: forage mass harvest above stubble height, morphogenic attributes, bromatological composition and nutritional value. The effects of ''Aroeira'' trees on the micro-climatic conditions were also evaluated. The experiment adopted a randomized block design with five blocks (cutting seasons), two treatments (a shaded pasture-B. brizantha cv. Marandu shaded by M. urundeuvaand a pasture in full sun-B. brizantha cv. Marandu in full sun), and three replicates. The tree component, composed of the tree species M. urundeuva in the experimental density adopted, increased dry matter and crude protein of the forage mass harvest above stubble height, without affecting the concentration of neutral detergent fibre or acid detergent fibre, thus causing dry matter and organic matter in vitro degradability as well as effective degradability of the forage grass to remain the same as those obtained in full sun. Therefore, the results of this study show the possibility of using trees and grass to increase both animal production and environmental services.
Palavras-chave: capim-braquiária, compostos nitrogenados, nitrogênio amoniacal ruminal, digestibilidade parcial, pH ruminal Effects of Feeding Different Protein Levels of Supplements to Finishing Cattle in Pasture During the Dry to Rainy Transition Season on Apparent Digestibility and Metabolism of Ruminal and Nitrogenous CompoundsABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to evaluate ruminal, intestinal, and total tract apparent digestibilities of nutrients as well as metabolism of ruminal and nitrogenous compounds in supplemented finishing cattle during the drought to rainy transition season. Five Holstein x Zebu steers averaging 304 kg of live weight and 24 months of age located in five paddocks (0.34 ha each) of Brachiaria decumbens were used in this trial. The supplements fed (4 kg/animal/day) contained ground corn, whole soybean, urea, ammonium sulfate, and minerals and were formulated to yield, on as fed basis, 12, 16, 20, and 24% of crude protein (CP). Four animals were assigned to a 4 x 4 Latin square with experimental periods lasting 21 days. The remaining animal was not supplemented and was used for comparative purposes (CONT). No significant differences in ruminal, intestinal, and total tract apparent digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber were observed by increasing the CP contents of the supplements. Similarly, abomasal flows of total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, and microbial nitrogen (MICN) did not differ when the CP contents of the supplements were increased. Ho...
Re-ensiling of previously ensiled forage has been a common practice in Brazil, and the use of inoculants may provide a means of reducing dry-matter (DM) loss. This study aimed to determine the effect of reensiling and the use of microbial inoculants on the quality of sorghum silage. Treatments were presence/ absence of an inoculant (Lactobacillus plantarum and Propionibacterium acidipropionici) in the silage, and the re-ensiling, or not, of the material after 24 h of exposure to air, and these were tested in a factorial 2 9 2 design. Losses due to gas, effluent and total DM were assessed, as were the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition, aerobic stability, and aerobic counts of microorganisms. Effluent loss was higher in re-ensiled silage, and these silages had lower lactic acid content and higher levels of acetic and propionic acids. The in vitro DM digestibility was lower in the reensiled sorghum silages. The re-ensiled silage had higher aerobic stability. The inoculant only increased the acetic acid content of the silage. The re-ensiling of sorghum silage increased effluent loss by 71Á2%, and reduced DM digestibility by 5Á35%. The use of inoculant did not influence the quality of sorghum silage.
Contudo, animais suplementados apresentaram maiores RC e TA e menor TO em comparação a SAL. A avaliação econômica de suplementos, de forma diferencial ao tratamento controle, mostrou maior renda bruta para S20.Palavras-chave: Brachiaria decumbens, ganho de peso, rendimento de carcaça Crude Protein Levels in Multiple Supplements for Finishing Crossbred Beef Cattle at Pasture During Dry Season: Productive Performance and Carcass CharacteristicsABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the productive and economical performance of supplemented crossbreed steers during the dry season. Twenty five holstein x zebu steers, with 367.7 kg of live weight and 24 months old, grazing in five paddocks of Brachiaria decumbens (3 ha), were used. The supplements were constituted of grounded corn, whole soybean seeds, urea, ammonium sulfate and mineral salt, and were formulated to contain levels of 12, 16, 20 and 24% crude protein (CP) as fed basis, which constituted the treatments S12, S16, S20 and S24, respectively. The supplements were supplied to the animals in the level of 4 kg/animal/day. A group of animals were allotted to untreated control treatment (SAL) and received exclusively mineral salt. CP levels in the supplements caused quadratic outcome on the variables average daily gain (ADG), final live weight (FLW) and necessary days to reach 450 kg of live weight (D450), which presented critical responses on the CP levels of 19.53% (0.943 kg), 19.38% (465.8 kg) and 19.22% (90.6 days), respectively. The supplementation allowed superior animal performance compared w...
Palavras-chave: fermentação, silo experimental, valor nutritivo, volumoso Chemical Characterization and in vitro Digestibility of Sunflower SilagesABSTRACT -Silages of thirteen cultivars of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were evaluated for chemical characteristics and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). The silages were produced when the plants presented above 90% of ripe grains. The experimental procedure followed a entirely randomized design and the mean values were compared by SNK test (P<.05). The smallest content of dry matter, 19.8%, was obtained for the hybrid M737, and the highest were observed for Contiflor 7, with 31.2%, and Cargill 11, with 32.2%. The pH values varied from 4.1 up to 5.5, and the contents of ammonia-nitrogen as percentage of total nitrogen varied from 5.9% up to 14.6%. The general averages obtained for lactic, acetic and butyric acids were of 7.1%, 1.9% and 0.06%, respectively. The hybrid Rumbosol 91 presented the smallest percentage of crude protein, with 7.2%, while contents above 9.0% were observed for five cultivars. The general average of ether extract (EE), 14.7%, was quite high when compared to others contents usually obtained for roughage. The contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and lignin presented general averages of 45.8%, 35.7% and 6.4%, and were negatively correlated to IVDMD (general average of 49.8%). The silages presented low concentrations of resi...
