RESUMOAs afl atoxinas são metabólitos secundários produzidos por fungos do gênero Aspergillus. Tais substâncias são tóxicas para o homem e animais, possuindo ação mutagênica, carcinogênica, teratogênica e de imunossupressão, sendo a afl atoxina B1 o mais potente carcinógeno natural conhecido. As afl atoxinas ocorrem principalmente em produtos oleaginosos e ricos em proteínas, tendo sido encontradas em castanhas de caju, uma noz produzida abundantemente no Brasil, país que apresenta condições climáticas propícias para o desenvolvimento de tais micotoxinas. O objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar um levantamento da ocorrência de afl atoxinas em castanhas de caju comercializadas por vendedores ambulantes no centro da cidade de Teresina, Piauí. Dez amostras foram coletadas aleatoriamente, sendo avaliada a ocorrência de afl atoxinas B e G, utilizando-se a técnica de cromatografi a em camada delgada (CCD), com a detecção das afl atoxinas nas cromatofolhas efetuada em duplicata. Em nenhuma das amostras foi encontrada afl atoxinas. No entanto, é válido ressaltar que a não detecção de afl atoxinas não descarta a possibilidade da presença das mesmas nas amostras de castanha, uma vez que a CCD possui certo limite de detecção para estas micotoxinas. Apesar da negatividade do exame, é importante destacar que estudos como este são de suma importância e devem ser realizados com frequência, tendo em vista que o consumo de alimentos contaminados com afl atoxinas, mesmo que em doses mínimas, na ordem de nanogramas, confere risco potencial à saúde.Palavras-chave: Afl atoxinas.
