The objective of this work was to investigate the prevalence and determinants of medicines consumption in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out in a representative sample of 331 households. A total of 1,370 persons living in Fortaleza were interviewed from October 2002 to January 2003, and 1,366 were selected for this study. Consumers were defined as all persons having used one or more drugs during the preceding 15 days. The prevalence of medicine consumption was 49.7%. The following were the predictive factors for medicines consumption according to the multivariate logistic regression analysis: family income > 3 minimum wages, older age ( > or = 50), female gender, > or = 3 persons living in household, chronic disease, having a health insurance plan, and one or more visits to the doctor in the last three months. Prevalence of medication use was high in Fortaleza but was similar to that found elsewhere in Brazil and in other countries. Inequality in the access of medications was identified.
Abstract. To determine the role of moderate-and low-intensity infections with Schistosoma mansoni and intestinal helminths (hookworm, Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides) on the prevalence of anemia and their relationship to iron consumption, a cross-section of 1,709 children in rural Brazil was studied. All participants were selected for infection with one or multiple helminthic parasites, and demographic, anthropometric, and dietary intake were surveyed. The prevalence and intensity were as follows: hookworm infection, 15.7% and 8.6 eggs/g; T. trichiura, 74.8% and 190.5 eggs/g; A. lumbricoides, 63% and 1,905.5 eggs/g; S. mansoni, 44.5% and 60.3 eggs/g. There was no increase in odds ratio for anemia with any combination of intestinal helminths without S. mansoni infection. By logistic regression, the odds ratio for having anemia when infected with S. mansoni and two intestinal helminths was 1.7 (95% CI, 1.1-2.5) and for S. mansoni and three intestinal helminths was 2.4 (95% CI, 1.2-4.6) compared with children with a single parasite species. Children with an adequate intake of iron had no increased odds of anemia independent of the combination of parasite infections.
RESUMOObjetivo: Investigar a associação entre níveis elevados de adiponectina plasmática (AdipoQ) e baixo risco cardiometabólico (RCM) em obesas (MO b ) -all non-hypertensive, normolipidemic, and non-diabetic -conducted in SUS (Brazil's Public Health System) outpatient referral services for obesity in the City of Salvador, Brazil. Secondary data were collected from medical records; primary and complementary data were obtained from a clinical pathology laboratory. Values of AdipoQ > 10.00 µg/ml (≥ 3 rd quartile) were considered elevated. Descriptive, bivariate, and conditional logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: A statistically significant positive association between low CMR and AdipoQ > 10.00 µg/ml in physically active (AOR = 5.1; CI95%: 1.8-14.3), non-smoking (AOR = 3.6;CI95%: 1.6-8. (1).
