This article examines the mathematical sense-making of children as they use physical devices to learn about linear functions. The study consisted of videotaped problem-solving sessions in which pairs of 8th graders worked on linear function tasks using a winch apparatus, a device with springs, and a computerized input-output machine. The following questions are addressed: How do children make sense of physical devices designed by experts to foster mathematical learning? How does the use of such devices enable learners to access selected aspects of a mathematical domain? The concept of transparency is suggested as an index of access to knowledge and activities rather than as an inherent feature of objects. The analysis shows that transparency is a process mediated by unfolding activities and users' participation in ongoing sociocultural practices.
This article makes a brief foray into state-of-the-art in Virtual Reality technologies and into semiotic studies in the field of Human-Computer Interaction in order to invite the reader to think about human´s current situation. From this perspective, we shall seek to raise new questions about the forms of communication and interaction mediated by digital technologies. These forms deal with the fact of fiction and non-fiction going hand-in-hand, taking shape in images which, and in virtual beings who, co-inhabit both our imagination and the scenarios which comprise the parallel worlds of virtual environments. This thinking is indispensable for us to understand, for example, the implications of these changes on children and young people development and how we conceive education in today´s world. Therefore, this article is based on: 1) studies that led to the dissertation entitled Digital Self: exploring the "I" construction on the Internet, submitted to the Post graduate Program in Cognitive Psychology at the Federal University of Pernambuco, 2) discussions kindled at the Laboratory of Interactional Analysis and Videography, which is linked to the Post graduate Program in Cognitive Psychology, and 3) discussions and projects developed in partnership between the
Palavras-chave: produção de sentidos; gráficos; jogos de linguagem; formas de vida; wittgenstein AbstractThe production of meanings in the use of graphs. This article discusses the meanings that potential readers of newspapers and magazines produce for quantitative relations presented as graphs in texts of the printed media. Our focus is the semiotic process proper to the production of meanings in an out-of-school context, which we illustrate through the analysis of interviews with a 16-year-old girl. Starting with a critical-methodological reading of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, we suggest the notion of the linguistic transit between a certain "school grammar" and the language games which are experienced by the subject in his or her understanding of graphs, as a central component of such a process. The article aims at contributing to the debate on the use of quantitative information in everyday life out-of-school, as well as for the development of a cognitive view on issues related to the production of meanings.
This article offers a perspective on evaluating educational software based on users' dialogue as they engage in interaction with a particular program, rather than on features of the software per se. Building on analytical constructs and techniques of Conversation Analysis, we suggest an evaluative approach that identifies gaps or breakdowns in users' dialogues and maps the mismatches between users' actions and software behavior. The article presents two case studies to illustrate this dialoguebased approach, and discusses ways of integrating this perspective with more traditional guidelines for software evaluation based on features such as interface design and feedback types. q
