ResumoAs leishmanioses são antropozoonoses de ampla distribuição mundial e consideradas um grave problema de saúde pública. Com base nas informações sobre os aspectos epidemiológicos, a população pode mudar seu comportamento e atitude diante de tais doenças e, assim, tomar medidas preventivas que possam minimizar os riscos de contraí-las. Esse estudo teve como objetivo identificar o nível de conhecimento da população de Teresina, Piauí, sobre Leishmaniose Visceral (LV) e Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana (LTA). A coleta dos dados foi realizada por meio de questionário em 150 residências nos bairros Santo Antônio, Pedra Mole e Parque Alvorada no período de fevereiro a junho de 2013. A análise dos dados mostrou que grande maioria dos casos de leishmaniose ocorreu em indivíduos que possuíam no máximo o ensino fundamental completo e a renda familiar, na maioria dos entrevistados, chegou a um salário mínimo. Além disso, 89,3% das residências possuíam acumulo de matéria orgânica no peridomicílio, e todas estavam localizadas próximas de matas; 78,6% citaram a presença de mosquitos e de animais domésticos. 94,6% dos entrevistados desconheciam tanto a LTA, como também o transmissor da doença. Tal fato corrobora que a população desconhece que a presença de vegetação no peridomicílio, acúmulo de matéria orgânica, presença de animais domésticos, dentre outros fatores contribuem para a proliferação do vetor e para o estabelecimento e disseminação das leishmanioses no meio urbano. Objective: describing knowledge and identifying the attitudes of adolescents on the environmental problems in the community where they live, and analyze the relation of these do with health. Methodology: The study it used a qualitative approaching and the methodology of the research-action. A City School in Teresina-PI is the scene. The subjects were thirty adolescents. Results: The produced data converged for the formulation of three thematic categories, which portrayed Knowledge of adolescents of environmental problems, second about fragility of care for the environment, and third about diseases from environmental problems. Conclusion: subjects know the environmental problems of their communities and recognize their effect on health, however, one did not observe the adoption of transformational postures. Evident, then, the need to implement the theme in Health Education, a space for performance of the nurse. Key words: Knowledge. Attitudes. Education. Nursing. RESUMO Objetivos: descrever o conhecimento e identificar as atitudes de adolescentes acerca dos problemas ambientais presentes na comunidade onde vivem, e analisar a relação que fazem destes com a saúde. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo que utilizou uma abordagem qualitativa por meio da pesquisa-ação. O cenário foi uma Escola Municipal, no município de Teresina -PI. Os sujeitos foram trinta adolescentes. Resultados: Os dados produzidos convergiram para formulação de três categorias temáticas, as quais retratavam o conhecimento dos adolescentes sobre os problemas ambientais, a segunda sobre a fragilidade do cuidado ao meio ambiente e a terceira sobre as doenças decorrentes dos problemas ambientais. Considerações finais: Os sujeitos conhecem os problemas ambientais de suas comunidades e reconhecem os efeitos destes sobre a saúde, contudo, não se observou a adoção de posturas transformadoras. Evidenciou, então, a necessidade da implementação da temática na Educação em Saúde, um espaço de atuação do enfermeiro. Palavras-chave: Conhecimento. Atitudes. Educação. Enfermagem. Método: El estudio utilizó un enfoque cualitativo a través de la búsqueda-acción. El escenario era una escuela umbicada en Teresina -PI. Los sujetos fueron treinta adolescentes. Resultados: los datos obtenidos afluyeron para la formulación de las tres categorías temáticas, que retrató conocimiento de lós adolescentes sobre los problemas ambientales, el segundo sobre la fragilidad del cuidado del ambiente, y el tercero sobre las enfermedades derivadas de los problemas ambientales. Conclusión: los sujetos conocen los problemas ambientales de sus comunidades y reconocer sus efectos en la salud, sin embargo, no fue observado la adopción de posturas de transformación.
