The bryophytes of Gurupi Biological Reserve represent an important component of the biodiversity of the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. This study aimed to investigate the richness of bryophytes (Marchantiophyta and Bryophyta) from Gurupi Biological Reserve and compare it with that found in other surveys conducted in Maranhão and in the northeastern part of the state of Pará, because the latter shows similarities with the study area in terms of vegetation, geography, demography, and history of occupation. We recorded 983 occurrences of bryophytes (549 Marchantiophyta and 434 Bryophyta) corresponding to 62 species (43 liverworts and 19 mosses), 39 genera, and 12 families. Of those 62 species, 25 have previously been collected from all regions of Brazil, two are restricted to two regions, and four are restricted to the northern (Amazon) region. The bryophyte species identified within the reserve correspond to 28.9% of the known bryophytes in Maranhão and 31.3% of the known bryophytes in northeastern Pará, the reserve therefore more closely resembling the latter area. The exclusively Amazonian elements found in the reserve underscore their affinity for this biome and their presence in the state of Maranhão. The importance of this conservation area to Maranhão and to the Amazon region of the state is confirmed by the high number of new records for the state (41 species), five of which are also new records for northeastern Brazil.
During fieldwork to investigate bryophyte communities in disjunct areas of savannas in the Eastern Amazon, a new species of Cheilolejeunea was collected. The genus contains species mainly inhabiting tropical rain forests, which also occur in seasonal forests or xeromorphic forests, such as Cheilolejeunea adnata, Cheilolejeunea discoidea, and Cheilolejeunea rigidula. The aim of this paper is to describe and illustrate the new species, as well as to present comments on its morphology, taxonomy and distribution. The new species is characterized by profusely branched, creeping plants with leaves widely spreading to squarrose, imbricate, suborbicular to obovate with usually incurved, rounded to obtuse apex and mammillose leaf cells, often with a lenticular papilla on the dorsal surface. Further diagnostic characters, as well as comments on its distribution and similarities with related species, are given.
A checklist is a good base for gathering registers of biodiversity and supporting further studies. The aim of this paper is to present a checklist of the bryophytes from Amapá State, including the distribution data of the species. In total, 174 species (80 mosses and 94 liverworts) in 78 genera and 30 families are registered for Amapá State, northern Brazil, based on examined specimens and on a review of the literature. A table with the species, distribution data for all municipalities of Amapá State, and the first record for all species are presented.
The Brazilian Amazon forests are interspersed by savanna ecosystems distributed in the states of Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia and Roraima, presenting different distribution patterns. The objective of this work was to evaluate the richness, composition and fl oristic similarity of the bryophyte fl ora from fi ve disjunct savanna areas in the eastern Amazon and compare the richness with those of other savannas in Brazil. The collections were carried out from 2017 to 2018 in fi ve localities of the eastern Amazon. Twenty-two species of mosses and 22 species of liverworts were registered. The composition was expected for savanna ecosystems with 27 species of generalists and 16 sun specialists. There was a striking fl oristic difference between the areas, and the clusters showed that the eastern Amazon savannas are formed by different compositions related to their area. This study made it possible to discover one new record for the state of Pará, fi ve new records for the state of Amapá and one new record for the North region.
