As cidades, em suas instâncias atuais, estão sendo planejadas e desenhadas para solucionar problemas causados pela evolução do seu traçado, geralmente, orgânico. Porém a qualidade ambiental da vida numa grande cidade é esquecida. Isto se agrava no Brasil, que devido à ausência de metodologias e ações para prevenção e previsão dos problemas de poluição sonora, tanto na legislação quanto na prática de projeto arquitetônico e urbanístico, compromete a qualidade de vida da população devido ao aumento do ruído urbano. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo principal mapear a concentração de denúncias de poluição sonora existente na cidade do Natal/RN, de forma a proporcionar o estabelecimento de mais um instrumento de gestão urbana. Para o levantamento de dados, foram coletadas as denúncias de poluição sonora na Secretaria Municipal de Meio Ambiente e Urbanismo (SEMURB) nos anos de 2012 e 2013. A partir dos dados de localização e uso, as denúncias foram situadas individualmente no mapa da cidade do Natal/RN e inseridas no software de mapeamento acústico SoundPLAN. Cada ponto teve um nível de potência sonora específico estimado, resultando em um mapa com manchas de concentração de poluição sonora, instrumento inédito na cidade. Este mapa foi analisado de acordo com o quantitativo e concentração de pontos de poluição sonora das denúncias realizadas. A partir disso, a pesquisa demonstrou, até então, que a poluição sonora em Natal/RN ultrapassa os limites normativos, principalmente em bairros predominantemente comerciais. O mapeamento das áreas de concentração críticas quanto à poluição sonora de Natal, realizado através de denúncias, demonstra apenas parte da realidade deste problema na cidade. Infere-se que este problema é causado devido à falta de instrumentos legais adequados para a realidade do local e de corpo técnico para realizar ações dentro destas denúncias e fiscalizações.
O mapeamento do ruído é a uma ferramenta de análise acústica do espaço urbano adequada ao estudo da poluição sonora, pois permite a localização dos principais pontos críticos de ruído de uma determinada área e tem como objetivo o controle, a melhoria e a preservação da qualidade sonora. No Brasil essa ferramenta ainda é pouco utilizada, devido à inexistência de leis nacionais e normas técnicas que a tornem obrigatória. Esse artigo tem como objetivo reunir os dados sobre os mapas de ruído existentes no Brasil, como forma de possibilitar a criação futura de leis ou normas para a construção de mapas com uma linguagem única que permita realizar comparações entre cidades e estabelecer formas de gestão de ruído ambiental integradas. Para realizar o levantamento dos mapas elaborados no Brasil, foram coletados, nas bases de pesquisas nacionais (Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações ─ BDTD e Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior ─ CAPES), nos anais de eventos de conforto ambiental e acústica, e nos sites das prefeituras e secretarias de estado, os trabalhos desenvolvidos sobre o tema. Esse artigo apresenta, em ordem cronológica, os mapas realizados em trabalhos acadêmicos e estudos em órgãos públicos. A maioria dos mapas referese ao ruído de tráfego. No entanto, outros tipos de mapeamentos podem ser realizados, a exemplo da espacialização de denúncias de poluição sonora.
