Palavras-chave: cabras, composição química, estresse térmico, produção de leite Thermal Stress Effects on Milk Yield and Chemical Composition and Thermoregulatory Responses of Lactating Alpines GoatsABSTRACT -Six Alpine goats with an average milk yield of 2.5 kg/day were randomly assigned to two groups of three and allotted to thermoneutral or heat stress conditions, for 56 days in climate chamber room. A crossover experimental design was used. The goats under heat stress were exposed to a diurnal average air temperature plus simulated solar radiation of 33. 84 o C. The heat-stressed goats showed elevated respiratory frequency, respiratory minute volume, respiratory evaporation, rectal temperature and sweating rate, while the tidal volume and packed cell volume decreased. Further weight loss, decreased feed intake, and their water consumption doubled. The milk yield, the percentage of fat, protein, lactose and total solid contents decreased. The contents of chloride, calcium and phosphorus did not change. The goats mobilized the respiratory and sweating systems to lose heat to maintain homeothermy. The association between high air temperature and simulated solar radiation reduced the milk yield and the content of some milk components.
Palavras-chave: Guzerá, modelo misto, modelos não-lineares, Nelore, Nelore Mocho, zebu Growth Curve Parameters for Zebu Breeds Raised at Pernambuco State, Northeastern BrazilABSTRACT -Weight records of 24.028 zebu animals from Guzerá, Nelore, and Polled Nelore breeds available from Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders (ABCZ) database were used to estimate growth curve parameters. The measures were taken on animals which were born between 1960 and 2000, every three months, from birth to 24 months of age. Non-linear Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, Mitscherlich, von Bertalanffy, Richards, and Double Logistic models including sex, farm, year of birth, month of birth, raising system, and interaction sex*raising system as fixed effects and sire and dam, as random effects were compared. Considering the number of iterations for convergence and the adjustment criteria, Double Logistic was the best fitting model and the Mitscherlich was the worst one. The most important fixed effects were sex, farm, year of birth, month of birth and raising system. The major random effect was the dam effect. The variability observed in this study indicates the possibility of changing the growth curve by a breeding program.
Goats are important from a socioeconomic perspective for the poor in arid regions, worldwide. Nevertheless, more than half of the local breeds in the world are threatened and have not been fully characterized. The Canindé is one of the main local breeds of northeastern Brazil and, like most, their effective numbers have fallen over the years and needs to be characterized. Many tools are available for assessing the phenotypic profile of a breed and multivariate techniques are important when considering all variables simultaneously. The present study utilized multivariate techniques for phenotypic characterization of the Canindé goat breed from 11 morphometric variables (HL = head length; FW = face width; HW = head width; BL = body length; CG = chest girth; WH = wither height; SRH = sacral region height; CW = croup width; CL = croup length, SP = shin perimeter and ES = ear size) and morphological variables of qualitative character (presence and absence of earrings, horns, beard, abnormal teat number and hair length) collected from herds from different states (populations) in the northeast of Brazil. Multivariate analysis allowed the differentiation and characterization of the evaluated individuals, HL, FW, WH, SRH and BL variables were the most important to define the phenotypic profile of the studied populations. Examined whether spatial organization of individuals was assessed in each state of the Brazil demonstrated considerable diversity of phenotypes within breeds from the different states. These data could be used successfully in a conservation breeding programme.
Palavras-chave: consumo, digestibilidade, energia, produção de leite, semi-árido Replacement of Corn by Forage Cactus in the Total Mixed Rations for CrossbreedLactating Cows ABSTRACT -The experiment was conduced to evaluate the effects of corn replacement for forage cactus on the performance of crossbreed lactating cows and nutrient digestibility. Eight cows were assigned a two latin square design in a factorial 2 x 2 arrangement (two forage cactus cultivars, with or without corn). There was not interaction between forage cactus and corn and the effect of both were analyzed in an isolated way. The intake of dry matter, organic matter, acid detergent fiber, crude protein, ether extract and total carbohydrates were not affected by the forage cactus. Animals that received giant cultivar presented larger neutral detergent fiber intake. The diets with corn presented larger dry matter intake (kg/day and % of LW). The intake of TDN, the coefficients of digestibility of all nutrients, the fat corrected milk production, fat content and kg of milk: dry matter intake ratio were not affected not by the forage cactus cultivars neither by the inclusion of corn.Key Words: digestibility, energy, intake, milk production, semi-arid IntroduçãoAs características climáticas do nordeste afetam diretamente a potencialidade pecuária da região, principalmente pela menor quantidade de forragens ocasionada pelas secas periódicas de maior ou menor intensidade.
