This paper discusses the modeling via mathematical methods based on fractional calculus, using Caputo fractional derivative. From the fractional models associated with harmonic oscillator, logistic equation and Malthusian growth, an unexpected behavior of the Caputo fractional derivative is discussed. The difference between the rate of variation and the order of the Caputo fractional derivative is explained.
Modelagem Fracionaria. Método da Transformada Diferencial Generalizada AbstractThe generalized differential transform method is applied to solve the fractional generalization of Malthus problem. To better explain the method, it is given an alternative and simpler way to calculate the transform without using fractional derivatives. Initially, the unknown function is represented as a power series in which the exponents are multiples of the derivative order. Then, the differential equation is reduced into a system of algebraic equations for the terms of the differential transform. The algebraic solution give the terms of the series that represent de solution of the differential equation. In the Malthus model, the system of equations is linear and easy to solve. In this case, one recovers the analytical solution that is usually obtained using the Laplace Transform.
