IZOD IMPACT BEHAVIOR OF POLYESTER MATRIX COMPOSITES REINFORCED WITH PURE RAMIE FABRIC AbstractThe search for materials that meet the environmental demands that has emerged over the years opens an important market for the application of natural fibers. In addition to being biodegradable and from renewable sources, natural fibers enable the production of composite materials of low density and good mechanical properties. To further increase these properties, it is studied the use of natural fiber fabrics instead of aligned fibers. The main advantages of this new configuration are to reinforce the composite in more than one direction simultaneously and, due to their compactness, to enable the incorporation of a larger fraction of reinforcing material. This study has investigated the impact resistance of composite polyester matrix reinforced with pure ramie fabric, which is one of the strongest lignocellullosic fibers found today. The specimens were reinforced with 1, 2 and 3 layers of fabric and were tested in Izod impact pendulum. Based on the results, it is concluded that increasing the volume fraction of fabric it increases the impact resistance of the composites.
Some advantages of the natural fibers are the lower density, renewability and biodegradability. Aiming to further improve the properties of natural fibers composites, it is investigated the performance of composites reinforced with natural fibers fabrics, since they provide multidirectional reinforcement and enables the introduction of a larger fabric volume fraction. In this work, it was investigated the tensile strength of the polyester matrix composites reinforced with different volume fractions of Ramie tissue, which is one of the strongest lignocellullosic fibers. The specimens were tested in an Instron universal testing machine. The results revealed a increase in the tensile strength with the increase of tissue volume fraction.
So, the natural vegetal fibers stand out as analternative reinforcement material for their good mechanical properties, low cost and for being biodegradable. One of the natural fibers that has gained more prominence in last decades is the rami fiber, object of numerous studies. In this work, it was investigated the effect of ramie fabric as reinforcement for the epoxy matrix under Charpy and Izod impact tests. The methodology used was the production of laminated plates under vacuum. The results show a remarkable difference in the impact resistance of the composite compared to the non-reinforced matrix.
