VALUATION OF THE CARE TEAM ORAL COMMUNICATION TO COMATOSE PATIENT AT AN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU) SUMMARY:Introduction: Coma is a clinical status of unconsciousness in which the patient is not self-awared or cannot react to his or her environment for a long time. Even in this condition, it is highly essential that medical procedures that are about to be performed have to be communicated orally to comatose patients by the care team. Objective: The aim of this study was to check if the care team at the ICU of a hospital located at the south region of the state of Minas Gerais was actually communicating orally to comatose patients the medical procedures performed on them. Materials and Methods: The essay conducted at the ICU of the analysed the oral communication of the care-team during assistance to comatose patients and it was based in CARDIM et al. 's protocole (2004). Results: It was demonstrated that 20,4% medical procedures were actually communicated to comatose patients but 79,60 of them were performed without previous oral communication. Conclusion: Our data made possible to conclude that the care team is not actually making use of the oral communication to inform or explain the procedures to be performed to comatose patients. We regard the humanization of the assistance to be essential.
