The author criticizes the theories of the avant‐garde advanced by Bürger and Poggioli for their incapacity to theorize the process of social recognition of art. Without this dimension, their theories are based on a tautology. While recognising the positive contribution of Bourdieu's sociology of taste, the author notes that this approach has emphasized the stability of the structural determinations of the art world and seems to have sacrificed the ambition of previous theories of the avant‐garde to understand the historical conditions of its appearance and evolution in Western societies.
Problems encountered in political education are often seen in terms of errors of political analysis or in terms of educational methods. Without denying the importance of these questions, the author is more concerned about the social significance of the relationship that exists between those who "know" and "those who don't" Organizing discussions or writing position papers is not only a way to fight capitalism, it is also "management". Pedagogical questions are embedded in social relationships in which the power of educator and the consequent forms of collaboration and resistance on the part of the participants must be analysed. The author makes the distinction between the "analyses" of the political situation by the various actors and the "voice" with which they speak; the latter reflecting their position in the social situation. While the "analysis" of the educators may be correct, the "Voice" conferred to them by their position can have the effect of reinforcing the gap between educators and participants especially when the analysis is based upon theoretical or historical references. The analysis of conflicts within political education groups must certainly include a careful political evaluation of the different points of view but at the same time an analysis of the political "lines" involved cannot reveal a full picture of the nature of these conflicts.
