A utilização de propostas didáticas no ensino de química, que usem a experimentação, pode auxiliar na compreensão de conteúdos abstratos, como contribuir para motivar e despertar o interesse dos alunos durante as aulas. Diante disso, o presente estudo teve por objetivo investigar a capacidade do extrato das folhas da espécie Alternanthera brasiliana como indicador natural para o uso em aula experimental de química. Para tanto, foi necessário quantificar o teor de antocianinas monoméricas totais, além de determinar o comprimento de onda de máxima absorbância do extrato como, também, o valor de pKind. No teste de coloração, prepararam-se soluções que variam de pH 2 a 12, sendo adicionadas 6 gotas do indicador natural em cada solução, de modo a observar a variação da coloração das soluções em relação ao pH do meio. As colorações apresentadas pelas soluções foram: rosa (pH de 2 a 9) e amarelo (pH 10 a 12). A partir das demais análises realizadas, pode-se concluir que apesar do extrato das folhas não apresentarem altos teores de antocianinas (7,54 mg/100 g), demonstrou potencial para indicar soluções alcalinas acima de pH 9, podendo ser notada uma mudança de coloração visível de rosa para amarelo. Assim, a metodologia utilizada nesta pesquisa pode ser incorporada como prática de laboratório nas aulas de química.
