The development of risk acceptance and risk mitigation evaluation criteria in various contexts is reviewed. Past and present attempts to derive such criteria for use by decision-makers on public hazards are noted. It is intended to provide a structured presentation of the generic approaches that have evolved for the development of these criteria in order to establish a foundation for their consideration as elements of potential management information systems that would support risk-based medical decision making--that is, potential medical risk management systems.
