There is growing consensus among the scientific community members about the urgency of debating ways to promote Open Science (OS). However, the notion of OS itself has been highly controversial, encompassing different meanings and values. Two distinct conceptions have emerged: the first highlights principles such as acceleration, efficiency, and reproducibility; the second perspective is grounded in participation, social justice, and democratization of knowledge. Both models accomplish distinct goals while facing specific limits and challenges to improve scientific production. Even though the first conception has become more celebrated among some top-ranked journals, we question approaches that standardize scientific practices, neglect global diversity, and undermine the importance of local contexts. By discussing the pioneering role that researchers and journals in Latin America have played toward a pluralistic interpretation of OS, this article contributes to a more nuanced understanding of scientific production in the Global South.
PT. *** EN. This article analyzes the process of normalization of Jair Bolsonaro's anti-gender discourse by the Brazilian print media in the ten years preceding his candidacy and subsequent election to the presidency of the Republic of Brazil (2008-2018). The thematic of gender has been present in the political trajectory of the current president since he occupied, as a parliamentarian, one of the seats in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. During this period, he intervened in several public episodes expressing a morally conservative rhetoric, as well as his links with neo-pentecostal religious groups seeking to frame public discussions on gender issues within the field of the "moral discourse of values", a recurrent theme in Bolsonaro's political practice. For this study, we selected two newspapers with large circulation in the country: Folha de S. Paulo and Estado de São Paulo. The objective of the research was to determine whether the two newspapers used mechanisms in their media coverage to standardize the anti-gender agenda led by Bolsonaro. The corpus is composed of all the articles published on the websites of both newspapers between 2008 and 2018 that concern both Jair Bolsonaro and gender issues. The methodology adopted is content analysis, applied to a total of 215 entries. Three categories were applied: 1) plurality of sources and origin of the agenda; 2) interpretation of the newspaper; and 3) phatic style/function and exploration of controversy. The results found show that both newspapers gave way to Bolsonaro's populist communication strategies. Moreover, the newspapers reproduced his misogynistic and homophobic statements and attacks without providing analysis, contextualization or counterbalancing them with nuanced views on the issues. In this sense, the data set demonstrates that the newspapers contributed to the process of building and legitimizing the Bolsonarista agenda to combat gender equality. *** FR. ***
