para adquirir la infección por VIH, con el fin de promover una vida sexual sana y el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida. Se realizó una encuesta auto-administrada y anónima en la población estudiantil, durante el ciclo lectivo del año 2008 en las diferentes sedes que tiene la Universidad de Costa Rica en todo el país. Al final del trabajo de campo se logró recolectar un total de 497 cuestionarios. La distribución por sexo y edad representó en forma adecuada a la población estudiantil de la Universidad de Costa Rica donde no se dan grandes diferencias. La mayoría de los estudiantes son del área de Ciencias Sociales. El 86% de los estudiantes indicó haber tenido relaciones sexuales y el promedio de edad de inicio de las relaciones sexuales en ambos sexos, fue de 18 años. Un mayor porcentaje de las mujeres (43%) respecto a los hombres (38,7%) tuvieron la última relación sexual en menos de una semana. La monogamia y el uso de preservativo fueron considerados por la mayoría de los estudiantes como prácticas de sexo seguro. Al consultar a los encuestados donde habían recibido charlas, cursos sobre sexualidad o educación sexual, el sistema educativo fue la principal fuente de información sobre el tema. RESUMENEl estudio tuvo como objetivo ofrecer la prueba voluntaria del VIH a la comunidad estudiantil de la Universidad de Costa Rica, acompañada de un servicio de consejería, con el fin de informar el resultado de la prueba y además dar contención, apoyo e información sobre el tema. Paralelo al proceso anterior, durante el periodo 2007-2010 se aplicó una encuesta (autoadministrada) a la población universitaria de las diferentes sedes que tiene la Universidad de Costa Rica en todo el país. Al final del trabajo se logró recolectar un total de 580 cuestionarios de un total de 2911 estudiantes que estuvieron interesados en realizarse la prueba. Un 75% de las personas entrevistadas tenían 23 años de edad, grupo conformado por mujeres ( un 55%) y hombres (un 43,8%). Respecto al tipo de relaciones sexuales alrededor de un 80% manifestaron ser heterosexuales, un 9,1% homosexuales y un 3,6% bisexuales. Luego, en cuanto al número de parejas que han tenido, un 50% de los estudiantes indicó haber tenido 4 parejas desde que se inició su vida sexual. Un 78,8% utiliza siempre y casi siempre el condón en sus relaciones sexuales. Por último, en relación con los métodos anticonceptivos, un 39% afirmó que no utiliza ningún método y un 19%. indicó utilizar anticonceptivos orales. Después de tres años de estudio, solo cuatro estudiantes de la sede Rodrigo Facio resultaron con una prueba de anticuerpos positivos. Estos estudiantes fueron remitidos a las Clínicas de Sida de los Hospitales Rafael Ángel Calderón y México. Este esfuerzo es muy importante, porque permite la prevención de nuevos casos y se puede brindar el apoyo que la Universidad de Costa Rica debe proporcionar a la comunidad universitaria.Palabras clave: consejería, jóvenes, prueba-VIH CITED ABSTRACTThe study was intended to offer voluntary HIV test to the student community of the University of Costa Rica accompanied by a counseling service in order to report the result of the test and also to contain, support and give information on the subject.
