RESUMO: Segundo a Organização Mundial da Saúde o AVC é uma síndrome clínica de origem vascular, que leva a comprometimento encefálico focal ocasionado pela interrupção do fornecimento sanguíneo ao encéfalo devido à ruptura ou obstrução de um ou mais vasos sanguíneos, de início rápido e com duração maior que 24 horas. Suas repercussões levam a danos celulares e déficits neurológicos resultando em morte neuronal e disfunção do Sistema Nervoso Central e órgãos efetores. As manifestações clínicas mais frequentemente encontradas pós-AVC são motoras, cognitivas e psicoafetivas. Foi demonstrado também significativa incidência de alterações do sono e redução da qualidade do sono nos indivíduos pós-AVC. Essa é uma manifestação prevalente e está associada a chance de redução da qualidade de vida desses idosos. Desta forma, tornou-se relevante a avaliação de aspectos do sono, seus impactos e relação com a qualidade de vida desses indivíduos. Tratou-se de um estudo observacional, transversal e de natureza quantitativa, onde os indivíduos foram alocados em dois grupos, um grupo de indivíduos idosos pós-AVC (GAVC) e um grupo de idosos sem AVC (GC), e foram avaliados através de questionários específicos para a qualidade do sono de Pittsburg (IQSP), sonolência excessiva diurna através da Escala de Sonolência de Epwort (ESE) e Qualidade de Vida (WHOQOL-bref). Ao analisar os resultados da ESE percebe-se que houve respostas com diferenças significativas entre os escores dos grupos. O grupo de idosos com AVC mostrou-se com escores maiores, indicando maior prevalência de sonolência diurna. A análise do escore global do IQSP do GC demonstrou que 68,57% dos indivíduos apresentaram uma qualidade de sono ruim e apenas 11,43% foram classificados com presença de transtorno do sono. O GAVC apresentou médias menores dos escores de QV. O estudo reforça a necessidade de avaliar o paciente de forma global, considerando todos os aspectos relacionados à sua saúde, inclusive a sua perspectiva sobre a qualidade do sono e qualidade de vida. Espera-se que os resultados desse estudo possam favorecer na implementação de novas estratégias de políticas públicas de saúde.Palavras-chave: Acidente vascular cerebral, Qualidade de vida, Sono.
